5.0 out of 5 stars Anthony Mann and James Stewart team up for WINCHESTER '73.The gun that won the West.
James Stewart's first Western was DESTRY RIDES AGAIN (1939) eleven years later he played the former army scout Tom Jeffords in BROKEN ARROW (1950). Directed by Delmer Daves, then came WINCHESTER '73. But it was Anthony Mann's WINCHESTER '73 that was given its public release first, which also revealed to the public a hitherto unknown harder-edged Stewart which was to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I would not rate this film quite as highly as other reviewers here. The theme is pretty much standard Western fare - revenge - but the landscapes are interesting and camera work unfussy.

I thought best acting came from Dan Duryea as a gunman who's portrayed as psychotic but kept this side of plausibility. Shelley Winters is a spirited heroine, and James...

Although this film is in black and white it looses nothing from the storyline. Delivery of this DVD was 2 days.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the latest restoration, so why this re-release?, 6 Oct 2012
This review is from: Winchester '73 (1950) - Westerns Collection 2011 [DVD] (DVD)
Mine is not a review about the film, which is a masterpiece of American western from the genre's golden decade. It is about the Western Collections 2011 edition. In the US, the film was re-released in 2008 as part of 'The Western Collection', together with Bend of the River, The Rare Breed, The Far Country (this one in widescreen format) etc. The video of Winchester '73 was actually much better than the 2003 (2004 for Universal UK) edition: either it came from a better print or it was restored (scratches and similar print damage disappeared). In May 2011 Universal UK re-released more or less the same titles under the heading 'Westerns Collection 2011': one may be reasonably led to think they are the same as the US re-issues (for example, The Far Country offers the widescreen format, like its R1 2008 'twin'). Unfortunately, for Winchester '73 they used exactly the same print of the 2004 edition! I can't understand the sense of such re-release then...apart from the disappointment, it is also quite disrespectful toward intelligent buyers!

1.0 out of 5 stars I'd like to give this zero stars., 6 July 2009
This review is from: Winchester 73 [DVD] (DVD)
I have only ever seen one western this bad and that is the 'Good, bad and the ugly'.

Shelley Winters could not act her way out of a paper bag.

James Stewart is nearly as bad.

The plot and script are both ridiculous.

Avoid.
