A lovely read. An entertaining and amusing memoir of life in the Yorkshire Dales. Overflowing with eccentric Yorkshire folk. Reading it was a wonderful extension to my holiday to a beautiful part of the country... very atmospheric. I felt as if I was still there!

I enjoyed the book so much. The story was so readable, often amusing and the different characters really came to life. I felt part of his family while they were trying to make their new home liveable and living in an old caravan. Hardcastle descriptions of the countryside and the villagers are brilliant. I hope his other books will soon be produced for the Kindle as well.

I have no interest at all in antiques - they bore me to death. I've also had a bit of an overdose of Yorkshire country tales, with Mike Pannett and Jack Sheffield building on James Herriot's foundations (at least Titchmarsh writes about other parts of the country). However, my illness had taken hold and I needed some 'mindless' reading to entertain me - this seemed innocuous enough. What a pleasant surprise!

The first couple of chapters were bland, but as the characters unfolded, so the book started to get a hold of me. All the above writers build interest around fascinating characters (is that why they focus on old Yorkshire folk?), and Max Hardcastle's family, friends, neighbours and acquaintances (and even pets) are up there with them all. A rich tapestry of people who remain just believable enough for us to genuinely care about them and their welfare (or otherwise). A knowledge of antiques may have helped (some of the items mentioned were completely lost on me) but my ignorance did not detract from the balance of fun and interest that his stories and experiences brought. I immediately ordered the next two books from Amazon (Prime meant I got them the next day) and read them straight through.

Welcome to a select group, Max. I can't wait for the next installments.

Extremely good book. Very funny book interlaced with country tales. Very difficult to put down. I would thoroughly recommend this book. I shall look for more by this author.

Max Hardcastle has written a wonderful account of a family making a vital decision to relocate their small city centre antique business and home into a Yorkshire Dale small holding. The detail of all the hard work involved, plus the endless eccentric characters with wonderful names like, Canary Mary, Mucky Marion and Farmer Ted are an absolute delight.
Not only do we get a secret insight into a Dales community but, it is written extremely well in very good English which alone, makes it a very special read.
I am now at the end of the third book in the series and the amusing anecdotes never fail to amuse throughout.

It would probably make a delightful TV mini series.

Loved the author`s wonderfully rich and colourful storytelling both of the folk and the beautiful dale. His love of his family and homemaking are a joy to read about and his generosity towards the characters he calls friends is exemplary and in the main is returned in cart loads. All great fun and a thoroughly good read.

This is a delightful tale of a complete change of lifestyle. Covering all the trials and tribulations of moving to the Dales, but written with interest and enthusiasm.Lots of wonderful characters to meet along the way and a grand account of life among the antiques traders in a countryside setting. Highly recommended.
