Season 6 could have been so much better

** Contains possible spoilers **
I've just seen the season finale and now, sitting here thinking about the season as a whole, I really do think there has been a terrible decline in quality.
There were some big storylines in this season, some were well executed, some not so much. For a start, Barney finally met his real dad (the excellent John Lithgow) but the storyline fell flat with pointless party hard jokes and little brat attitude from Barney in the episodes his dad was in. This could have turned into something really good but instead the writers have transformed Barney from the coolest character on TV to the most shallow, childish and selfish (not in the good way like before, but to the point where he is actually quite horrible). These character flaws came about again when Barney started to fall for Nora, a girl he really cared for but treated like trash.
Another terrible TERRIBLE! storyline was Ted's love interest for the series, Zoey (urgh - don't even mention that name again to me!). I mean honestly what was the point of her character and storyline (other than the feud over The Arcadian, which could have lasted 3 episodes maximum)? She was just so horrible and annoying and you find out just a few episodes in that she is not the mother so why keep her about until the end of the season? The whole Ted/Zoey thing was without a doubt the worst storyline and character in the whole 6 seasons of HIMYM. The only good thing about her was that her husband was played by the brilliant Kyle MacLachlan in 4 episodes.
Then there's Robin. What exactly did her character contribute to this season? She dated a guy who was a dog. Erm... Well Robin Sparkles does make a return which was quite funny and her post break-up depression over Don is quite good, but that's about it really.
For me, this felt like it was Lily and Marshall's season. There's the shocking storyline early on which was dealt with very well (for the most part, minus Barney's YouTube jokes in one episode which were in very poor taste) that had a couple of episodes arc and was actually pretty emotional at times. Their attempts at getting pregnant were both funny and moving too.
Although this was the definitely the worst season so far, it did keep dragging me back for more and I did enjoy a lot of it (there were some brilliant guest stars too). Unfortunately where it is bad it is really bad this season, but luckily there were still some moments that made me remember why I have stuck with it for 6 years now. The last episode does finish on some cliffhangers in the typical HIMYM fashion which gives me a bit of faith that season 7 will make the show great again. The producers should seriously reconsider some of the writers next year though.
