5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive compilation of early 90s Detroit, UK and European techno
If you've never heard any of the tracks on this 2CD before then you are lucky, lucky people!

One track in particular: Balil's "Nort Route". I would defy anyone to make a better piece of electronic music, ever. If you only ever hear one techno track, that would be the one. AND there are 21 more, almost as good (BFC's "Galaxy" - oh yes).

There are two...

nothing like 76:14 and this is a shame, that album is a great mix a ambient drifting and housey chillout, this album was unpleasant to listen to. To be fair I cant write a better review as I flogged it as soon as I could so no longer have it. Shame

There are two main threads to this compilation. There's the Detroit guys, the real deal, and then there's the Europeans who made such a good stab at making Detroit music that some of them even had their stuff released on Detroit techno labels. The only exceptions are the more idiosyncratic sounds of 808 State and Aphex Twin. Overall, it's a kind of Ryder Cup of techno.

I could nitpick about what's not on here (I COULD) but that would be to miss the point - this is Global Communication's selection, not mine. And a bloody good one it is too: the tracks they were digging at the time - purism without self-consciousness. If you're looking for an entry point into Detroit techno or if you're a collector looking to get hold of a few rarities - this is a must-buy either way.

Two words that were never meant to be juxtaposed: techno and nostalgia. But there you go. 6 out of 5. This won't be going "back in the box" any time soon.

There's also a mixed 2CD version available (adding extra tracks; and also track-by-track commentary in the booklet) Global Communication - Back The Box (Mixed), but for me this edition - for the full length mixes - just has to be the one to get.
