You need to be absolutely clear before purchasing this - and it's not particularly cheap - what Apple products it actually works with:

It works FULLY with the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S - and that's it!

With iPad 1, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4th Generation (but not 3rd or earlier) you can stream videos - and that is all.

I did not pick this up from the Amazon product description, so it doesn't work fully with my iPad (it's not a 2), but luckily I have an iPhone 4S, so it works fully with that.

I still think it is ridiculously expensive, but that's Apple for you!

Bought this with a HDMI cable so I could use the iPad as a media store when I'm travelling rather than carting DVDs round with me. Worked straight away, but as a heads up for novices, if playing to a widescreen TV you need to set the widescreen option in the Video options under settings. Otherwise you end up with a sort of shrunk output with a big black border.

Now that Apple have prevented you from being able to watch content purchased from iTunes on a TV using this connector, it is a redundant product in my opinion.

This is expensive for a wire! The adapter itself is fine, and it works but if you have a love film account on your IPad you will not be able to use this cable to watch films, love films blocks it from working.

I have an ipad 2 and when I connect it using this adaptor to my Samsung LCD TV and select the correct HDMI channel, it works exactly as expected. Downloaded movies play in 720p HD which is fine and you have a single click option to view in widescreen mode with the blank area top and bottom of the screen or lose some the edges of the picture by playing it full screen. I usually choose the latter.

This adaptor turns your ipad into near enough a full blown media centre and it can be used to watch iplayer or show photos on your TV as well playing music if you have a decent sound system attached to your tv.

Good value for money.

....try again. The first one of these I bought for use with my TV from a different Amazon seller was temperamental and only worked for short bursts if at all before the TV showed "No Signal". I sent it back and ordered another from a different supplier (the one on top of this review) and it works perfectly. It mirrors what's on the iPad screen unless you are playing videos, when it shows an index and control screen on the iPad and the video itself on the monitor. It transmits sound too, of course.

The first HDMI cable I used also did not support it. That was a version 1.3 cable. I don't know if this matters, but I selected a version 1.4 one the second time and that works fine too. A flexible cable is needed if you want to have the iPad on your lap otherwise it pulls the plug out of the socket.

UPDATED - soon after I wrote this the cable stopped charging the iPad so I sent it back and finally bought an Apple one which does work

Took me a while to set it up, eventually found out that I have to upgrade the iPad and IPod to OS5. Works perfectly with iPad, difficulties with iPod for some apps.

Small but essential accessory. Might have been a bit pricy for what it is but gets used a lot to watch iPad movies, shows and streamed content on the TV

On the packaging there is a typo (Apple is not based in Cupertion, it should be Cupertino), and when connected to an Ipad, (under setting - about) the manufacturer is given as "CHCF".

I have been advised by Apple support that this is not what they'd expect from a genuine Apple item.

It kinda works, intermittently, but Netflix fails - does not play movies for more than a second (on the rare occasion it doesn't give a "Display not supported" error message before playback starts) and BBC Iplayer crashes as playback commences.

I've replaced with a genuine apple version - bought from a local store (at 3x the price) and it works flawlessly.

I've seen people suggesting how to make this work on various forums - switching cables, turning things on and off, etc, but I could not find away to solve my problems with this item.

Maybe this would have worked in older versions of IOS, before apple updated settings to prevent items not endorsed by apple from working.

I tested on the "New Ipad" ( 3rd Gen) (IOS 7), Iphone4 (IOS 6) and Iphone 4s (IOS 7) - none of these devices are jailbreaked.

Arrived promptly from the seller, but dispatched back equally quickly from me.
