5.0 out of 5 stars Buck has a Tiger and a super hit by the Tail, 5 Mar 2010
R. Loder "good old country music" (Manchester,England.) - See all my reviews
Buck Owens recorded this album in 1965, a year or two after he took Country Music by storm. With this album, and the title track, he crossed over into National prominence in the USA without compromising his Country credentials one little bit. He even spun off Ray Charles Cryin' Time, and that crossed back as a hit for Ray Charles. Amazing times. But Tiger by the Tail was the big national break through for Buck. Perhaps he got the idea from the Esso petrol advertisement about putting a tiger in your tank. Still, it didn't do Buck any harm, and he never looked back.
On the remainder of the album, the material is first rate west coast honky tonk with Don Rich on that twangy Telecaster, although playing fiddle on Maidens Prayer. The vocal harmonies are so tight, it sounds just like double tracking. Doyle Holly gets to provide the vocal on Streets of Laredo with his deep brown voice, a little too low register for Buck to harmonise with, so its a solo performance.
A nice bonus is two tracks of a live performance from Country Music Hootenanny, ghastly title, but great tracks. And in stereo.
A welcome reissue, and Sundazed ensure the best sound, together with a quality Rich Kienzle booklet.
