Bought this and their "Challenger" album a few days ago and haven't stopped listening to them. Most of their tracks have a great balance with some heavy shouting/screaming sections and then nice clean singing chorus parts as well (with the guitars and drums being heavy pretty much all the time).

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most intoxicating albums I've ever heard, 20 Sep 2012

An absolutely incredible album, which vocally delivers with a perfectly balanced mixture of powerful screams and unerring cleans. Easily one of the best metal albums i've ever listened to. A combination of great melodies and brutal breakdowns also serve to make this one of the most intoxicating albums i've heard. Can't recommend it enough, its just incredible

I'd heard a couple of the songs from this album while listening to internet radios, and I thought I'd listen to the whole album. This album is incredible, and explosive. It's fast, heavy, slow, melodic and discordant all at the same time. It's a very very good metal album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Metalcore at the next level, 17 July 2011

As we approach the midway point of 2011, it appears that the substantial success of York Metalcore outfit `Asking Alexandria' has had its subsequent rub-off effects unto aspiring bands, not the least of them in the States where they have enjoyed extraordinary success. Memphis May Fire's latest offering, `The Hollow' arguably uses a similar template, making a subtle metamorphosis from their previous album into the perceived promised land of commercially viable crabcore. So is it a success? The signs are most certainly there.

Though it follows in the footsteps of many before them, The Hollow manages to separate the band from a saturated bunch by providing a rare blend of your quite standard ultra-heavy metalcore beats (dropped, palm-muted guitars, double kick drum syncopation, vocal qualities akin to a man being set on fire), along with some genuinely catchy anthemic melodies. In this specific genre, instrumental cohesion and a sense of a genuine hard work ethic shines through, and here it sparkles. The abilities of vocalist Matty Mullins are particularly commendable - he manages to perfectly execute the dog like growls (animalistic comparisons for vocalists in metalcore is a compliment, I assure you) littered across the verses, and decorate them perfectly with his soaring, high-pitched yelps on the anthemic choruses. The strength of their sound lies in the transition between verse and chorus, found on tracks such as `The Sinner' and `The Victim'.

A mild gripe one may have is the seeming departure of a certain sound quality the band possessed on predecessor `Sleepwalking'. The `Southern Rock' feel that album in particular evoked - in particular its subtle punk-hardcore qualities - has almost completely dissipated in favour of seemingly commercial metalcore endeavours. It is not a complete metamorphosis, but you have the lingering feeling that a lot of people are trying to do what Memphis May Fire have decided to pursue as a genre-make up. Still, they pull it off very well, and with undeniable talent all round who knows how far this band can go.

For Fans of: Asking Alexandria, Underoath, Periphery
