The disk supplied is a reinstallation DVD for distribution with Dell computers.
This is not obvious until the software is opened, as it is only stated on the DVD.
The product key will not be accepted by Microsoft and the program displays that it is installed on a Dell Computer.
You have to open the packaging and install the DVD for all this to be made aware to you.
I am returning this to Amazon in the hope that I will receive a refund as it is not as advertised.
Of course the software had been opened, so we wait and hope.

14/02/13 Glad to report that full refund was received from Amazon

1. The supplier:
Box arrived in good time, packaged well enough and no issues with the key (in contrast to Amazon's last supplier JASONCO where it came with a ripped off key - Amazon refunded with no issue thankfully - 10/10 to Amazon.co.uk for aftersales customer service).

2. The product:
Windows 7 is a breath of fresh air compared to XP. Not knocking XP, tried and trusted which is why I stuck with it for so long, but it was creaking especially after the never ending updates. W7 is much faster and refined even with exactly the same hardware. I opted for the W7 Professional version, and it happened to be the OEM version which is fine for me, I don't need support (it's also much cheaper).

To install, I decided at add a new disk and installed cleanly on that. Then over time migrated my existing apps across. I kept the old XP disk in place so I could boot back to XP if I needed to (which I did initially to access apps I hadn't yet re-installed). All very easy to do, and I'd do it this way again rather than try to use existing same disk. It might take a bit longer, but it's a very controlled process, and totally at my own pace which I liked. I use it for business so couldn't afford any risks! (It doesn't allow a simple upgrade anyway going from XP to W7, it has to be a clean install).

The old XP disk is still in place (yes there are even some apps I rarely use which I haven't reinstalled, maybe I never will!). But there are some data files/documents which I've left there for the moment (I think my Outlook PST file is still there!), and I'm in no hurry. All my business files are on a separate server anyway.

There are some W7 "features" which take some getting used to. The "side-by-side" windows feature is very useful when you want to make a comparison, I like that. But it can get annoying when I'm simply moving windows around on the screen and they decide to leap into a preset position I don't nessarily want, and I have to drag them back kicking and screaming.

W7 makes good use of my installed graphics card so things seem to pop open much quicker than with XP. Access to files seems quicker, and I like the Libraries facility. I like being able to hover on minimised app icons on the task bar and see what they're up to (e.g. on IE when you have a few windows open).

I also like the new Start button arrangement, where any frequently used apps or pinned apps also show recently used files that you can reopen (hover on the app and a recent files window pops up). You can also right click on this "recent" document window and pin a document to the list so it's always there when you want it. Very efficient!

I read instructions only as a last resort (and I'm not there yet), so I probably haven't discovered 5% of what W7 can offer, much to the despair I'm sure of whoever designed it. I did have Vista 64 on another media PC (came preinstalled), and I wasn't impressed (as most of the ROW it seems).

However the jump to W7 from XP is well worth it, and the transition wasn't as painful as I expected.

Bought this for my wife's 4 year old 32bit vista laptop.
Installs fine but be warned - as it is OEM you get the basic OS only - there are no drivers or other software.
You need to go to your laptop manufacturer's website to download the necessary drivers.
Does the job.

Item was delivered in good time and is exactly as described. I fail to see the reason why Amazon is requesting a "review" of a well known and much used operating sytem? Delivered quickly, works fine!

ZERO STARS would be more appropriate especially Microsoft. I bought this when I was upgrading my computer and fully understood that it was supposed to be an OEM version but after running this for a few months, Microsoft have now declared it to be COUNTERFEIT and have revoked the licence. Why didn't this happen immediately? Of course they are hiding behind a "do not reply, this is an automatic email" crap. Who is the biggest thief here - Microsoft, Amazon, or the supplier? Whoever it is, they all seem to be profiting and I am the looser.
If I get my money back I will amend this post but I doubt if any of these people will bother. I'm now out of pocket and have a stuffed up computer!

I bought this product to revive an old PC that I had refurbished - exactly what the product purported to be for. The disk I received was genuine (as far as I could tell), but the license is definitely a forgery. Somehow or other it got through the online authentication process, so I haven't had a practical problem, but if you visit Microsoft's web site and check to see what a genuine license should look like, what you get here is nothing like what you should get if the product were completely above board. Clearly someone has found a way of generating valid license keys and can produce a plausible license label, if you don't look too hard.

I reported the matter to the vendor and was told to "grow up and get a life". I contacted Amazon about the matter, and was told that the vendor would be dealt with appropriately harshly, and that I would receive a refund n matter what. Amazon hasn't made good on either of these points, as far as I can tell, and I think I was simply fed platitudes to shut me up. Amazon have no financial interest in taking this seller down, and I would suggest that they're complicit in software theft as a result.

I explored the matter of reporting this matter to either Microsoft or the police, but fortunately for these scoundrels it's incredibly difficult to do.

The charity that everyone has heard of would not appreciate getting their license revoked, so in the end I find that I have to fall silent.

Works for 3 months trial/evaluation and then pops up to say that it is not genuine. On contacting Microsoft it is definitely not genuine and a search of the internet shows that they have been in dispute with Microsoft over selling illegal software.

Can't open a claim on Amazon so not sure if I can get my money back in any way, so probably out of pocket and will need to buy new software.

Please be careful if you buy this product or similar item from this supplier, I did point out to the supplier that the licence product id they supplied looks copied but I got a comment with a replacement licence id / number typed in a message saying use this one.

Reluctantly used the product and since Microsoft has blocked the software.

This product is a poor counterfeit CD of Windows 7 Pro and not a genuine Microsoft product. It was identified immediately on installation and rejected the Licence code supplied. This company has ripped me off and I’m not best pleased. I've asked for a refund and to date I've received no response.
