1 Brilliant / 1 Terrible portrayal from the book
on 22 October 2012
Me and my mum read all the Sophie Hannah books and love them! So when I saw this on Amazon we pre ordered straight away (I only saw it was on TV after the DVD had arrived!) We wondered how well they would be able to transfer the book to film as all the main characters have ongoing stories and the plots are always very complex.
The characters it turns out were portrayed well, if you haven't read the books however you'll probably be mystified at Charlie and Simon's relationship.
The DVD has two of Sophie Hannah's novels in two seperate features the first is Point of Rescue which follows a case after a woman and her child are found dead in their bathtub under the assumption that the mother killed her child and then herself, mixed in to this is another woman believing she has had an affair with the dead woman's husband only to find out it wasn't him at all. (hopefully that makes some sense!)
This was done really well I thought showing the characters and story really well, obviously its not quite as complex as the book but that would have been very difficult in 90 mins, overall really well done.
Then there is The Other Half Lives: well what to say really?! Nothing at all like the book in any way, shape or form! Me and mum watched this seperately and both had no clue how it had been changed quite so much! The absolute essential part of the story in the book was art and trying to discover who infact painted a series of pictures however the main character in this played a piano. It didn't fit the story at all and there was no way they could replace art for music. Even if you have not read the book this story I'm sure would make no sense as if they got almost to the end and panicked and just threw together the ending.
In all I'd say a one go watch but not to be watched again but still love the books!
