This review is from: Three Classic Albums Plus (Roy And Diz / Little Jazz / Swing Goes Dixie) (Audio CD)
This reissue sells itself a tad short, because it embraces four LPs but for one track. It begins with "Roy and Diz" from late 1954, in which the two trumpeters were joined by Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown and Louis Bellson, for an extended workout over five numbers. The album "Little Jazz" which follows was recorded a month earlier, and is the same line-up minus Diz and Bellson, with Buddy Rich in charge of the percussion. The second CD features Roy with Benny Morton, Eddie Barefield, Dick Wellstood, Walter Page & Jo Jones as his "Central Plaza Dixielanders", from an album called "Swing Goes Dixie" which was recorded in mid-1956. It winds up with "Coleman Hawkins & Roy Eldridge at the Opera House" from that October, with John Lewis, Percy Heath and Connie Kay.

As can be seen from that description, Roy Eldridge can be heard playing in a variety of settings, from bop to dixieland, and he acquits himself with honour throughout. He thrived in a jam-session atmosphere, whether the challengers were Dizzy Gillespie or Coleman Hawkins, neither of whom was a walkover.
