4.0 out of 5 stars The best way to live through the Ashes again, 21 Jun 2011

For the English cricket fan, the last Ashes series in Australia was a giddy, mind-boggling experience that many still struggle to really believe happened. Beating the dreaded Australians in their own backyard three times in the same series each time by an innings is something that only happens with a PC game that you've found brilliant cheat codes for. Re-reading the Guardian's over-by-over coverage is possibly the best way to relive the entire experience, confirming its reality, especially if you were reading the online coverage live while it happened the first time round.

Unlike the highlights DVDs, all the play is captured "in the moment" with zero additional hindsight applied, so the sudden and insane Australian batting collapses, the incredible crease occupation of Cook and Trott et al are there in their proper timings along with the e-mailed reactions of the readers, all equally incredulous and all nervously waiting for the Australian backlash that, marvellously, never came.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happiness is 766 and all that, 26 July 2013

It's not so much how many times I have read this book but how many more times I will read it. It's like a drug or an obsession. Whenever I am a bit low or in need of a lift then this is the first thing I pick up. With the current ashes series in full flow and my whole being once more consumed by cricket I reach for the book and away I go once more. Memories flood back of those freezing winter mornings when in the early hours I huddled on the sofa with endless mugs of tea watching the coverage on sky and basking in the glory of one of our greatest sporting achievements. I just love this book. Oh how I hope they produce one to cover the 2013 ashes in England (providing we win of course)!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ashes have stayed at home, 4 Dec 2011

This book evoked so many memories of 7 marvellous weeks for English cricket. Sat watching the Sky broadcasts in to the early hours as England gave Australia a real chasing. It was well worth the tired mornings and wanting to get back to bed. It was fascinating to read all the comments from Brits all around the world who were following the matches, recounting their experiences as England surely gained the upper hand. This was a fantastic performance from the team and this book has proved a perfect addition to my collection of memories of a perfect winter's cricket.

A must-have for every cricket lover - except possibly if you're Australian. Captures every moment of a great Ashes series with a satisfyingly wide range of voices and moods - the latter ranging from the instantaneuos to the reflective but every one spot on. A book to be relished like apple pie,a slice at a time, savoured slowly with maybe a glass or two of whatever takes your fancy - it's the nearest you can get to being there for every ball.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aussie bashing at its finest, 24 Mar 2013

A superb book about the Ashes series down under and the lavish beating imposed on our friends from the colonies. Taken from the entire Guardian over by over blog, of all 5 Ashes, this highlights how brilliant Ashes cricket is. Roll on this summer and this winter for another taming of the convicts.
