This review is from: Batman - The Brave And The Bold Vol. 5 [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
A popular comic for many years - recently revived - was the Brave and the Bold. This saw team ups between heroes [usually Batman and someone else] who wouldn't normally have met in the pages of their own comics. And both would learn life lessons as as a result of the team up.

This is the latest volume to collect episodes from a tv cartoon that takes the brave and the bold idea and comes up with team ups for Batman and his friends. It's very light in tone, often adopting the style of 1960's comics - which could see Batman travelling time or space and being light rather than grim and gritty - but it never gets silly.

It contains four episodes. Each of which runs for twenty two minutes. Every episode has a pre credits sequence that lasts for just over a couple of minutes, and usually tells a shorter story that often has no bearing on what happens in the rest of the episode.

First episode 'The Color of Revenge' tells of how Batman and Robin took down villain Crazy Quilt, only for the latter to get injured in the process. Years later, with the dynamic duo having gone their separate ways, they have to team up again when Quilt gets out. And is after revenge.

Robin here is all grown up and trying to prove he can do fine on his own [sorry Dick Grayson fans. He's not calling himself Nightwing here or wearing a nightwing costume as he has in comics, he's still Robin, albeit grown up and with a new version of the Robin costume] and that results in some great character interaction. This episode also takes one of the lamest villains ever created and makes them menacing. Which is quite an achievement.

Second episode is 'Legends of the Dark Mite.' A prime example of the show drawing from 1960's comics, as this involves Bat Mite. A fifth dimensional imp who is Batman's biggest fan and has reality warping powers, he's not the kind of thing that would appear in modern batman stories, so it's great fun to see him here. In an episode with some wonderful fourth wall breaking, comedy, and moments for those who know their Batman trivia and will thus know who Mr. Zero is. And it has Batman fighting giant easter bunnies. It's great fun.

'Hail the Tornado Tyrant' sees Batman help android Red Tornado build himself a son. But the latter has to learn moral lessons fast and gets the wrong idea about a few things, leading him into conflict with his father. An episode that gives food for thought. And has a memorable final scene.

In 'Duel of the double crossers' alien Warlords rule a planet called Warworld, where tough beings from across the galaxy are kidnapped and taken to and forced into gladiatorial combat. Mongul, who rules the planet, has forced western bounty hunter Jonah Hex to track down gladiators for him. When Mongul wants Batman, he and Jonah have a fight for survival on their hands.

An episode that great fight scenes and another great double act as Batman and Jonah work together.

Epileptics beware of some flashing images in episodes three and four.

There are no extras.

The disc starts with a trailer for a video game. But you can skip it by pressing the next button on the remote.

It has the following language and subtitle options:

Languagaes: English, Castilian Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish.

Subtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Polish.

It's another fun volume of a fun show for Bat fans of all ages.

All the Batman Brave and the Bold DVD series that I have purchased have been excellent and have entertained the children for hours. All the characters and stories are well thought out and wonderfully represented in a children friendly way without been too dark as some of the adult versions of the characters have a tendency to be.

Great animation, great storytelling. Wonderful interpretations of classic characters. Great for kids and adults alike. Very clever. Full of references to the comics. Influenced by Grant Morrison.

For the price it was great value for money. The only downside is I don't think every episode is available on dvd yet.
