5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent book which provides a well-written overview of the Bible.

It starts by explaining the origins of the biblical text, before giving advice on the various types of translations which are available. Then follows an overview of the biblical story, both Old and New Testaments, and how this fits in with Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It ends...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 31 Aug 2011
This review is from: The Bible For Dummies®, Mini Edition (Dummies Mini) (Kindle Edition)

It ends with sections on various "biblical VIPs" as the book calls them i.e. Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Isaiah, Judah Maccabee, Mary, Jesus, Peter and Paul.

The book is titled "The Bible for Dummies", but I think this is a bit misleading. There is information in this book which will be of interest to anyone who wants to read the Bible, whether a "novice" or someone undertaking serious Bible study.

I only have one gripe. When referring to dates, the authors use B.C.E. and C.E. rather than the more traditional B.C. and A.D. (a little unusual considering the content of the book). However, that said, it's still well worth its 5 star rating.

If you went to Sunday School you will learn nothing new. I would recommend an illustrated chikdrens bible if you want to get the gist of the stories and Wikipedia for insight into the historical context
