3.0 out of 5 stars Not Original Soundtracks, Some Good Performances, 13 May 2011

This review is from: Nino Rota - The Soundtracks (Audio CD)
Being a fan of Nino Rota, I jumped the chance of ordering this 5-CD boxset when it first came out a couple of weeks ago, even the pertinent information like "Are they the original soundtracks?" or "which orchestra(s) performs the works" and "who is/are the conductor(s)" were not listed on Amazon.com.

The following information gives an idea of what this boxset is all about:

CD 1: Rare Sountracks 1933-1978
CD 2: The Godfather - Complete Soundtrack
CD 3: The Godfather II - Complete Soundtrack
CD 4: The Godfather III - Complete Soundtrack
CD 5: The Federico Fellini Movies

All tracks are performed by "Solisti e Orchestre del Cinema Italiano". The name of the conductor(s) is not disclosed anywhere on the CDs, leaflet, or cover jacket. Except the Godfather triology soundtrack, which utilized the original scores, most of the tracks on other CDs were arrangements. The two CDs which I found most interesting were CD 1 and 5, a collection of movie themes from over 3 dozen films.

CD 1:
Treno Popolare
La Freccia Nel Fianco (The Arrow)
Fuga In Francia
The Glass Mountain
Napoli Milionaria
Filumena Marturano
Toto E I Re Di Roma
Un Eroe Dei Nostri Tempi
War & Peace
Le Notti Bianchie (White Nights)
Buongiorno Fortunella (fortunella)
La Grande Guerra
Rocco E Suoi Fratelli (Rocco & His Brothers)
Radiolina
Il Gattopardo
The Taming Of The Shrew
Love Theme From Romeo & Juliet
Sunset, Sunrise (Hi Wa Shizumi, Hi Wa Noboru
Canzone Arrabbiata (Film D'Amore E D'Anachia)
Death On The Nile

CD 5:
Lo Sceicco Bianco
I Vitelloni
La Strada
Il Bidone
Le Notti Di Cabiria
La Dolce Vita
La Dolce Vita (Finale)
Boccaccio '70
8 1/2
Carlotta's Galop From 8 1/2
Giulietta Degli Spiriti
Il Charleston Di Giulietta
Tre Passi Nel Delirio
Fellini Satyricon
I Clowns
Roma
Amarcord
La Gradisca E Il Principe
Il Casanova Di Federico Fellini
Prova D'Orchestra
Fellini's Waltz

Although the sonic quality of the CDs is so-so, and the performances range from okay to decent, I still think this boxset is worth getting since Nino Rota is considered one of the greatest movie composers of the 20th century, in the same league as John Barry, Ennio Morricone, Bernard Hermann, Jerry Goldsmith, etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed to say the least, 12 Aug 2011

This review is from: Nino Rota - The Soundtracks (Audio CD)
This is the first disappointment I have had with many purchases from Amazon.
If I had of known this was "Electronic" Music I would not have bought it.
I suppose the price should have given the clue even though the previous review did not suggest electronic music.

What a waste of money!
