elegant design - but which size will you receive?
on 2 February 2014
This is a very nice and elegant design from Rotary. However having purchased it from two different sellers on different occasions, I received two different watches! Both are labelled 231/01 and the design of both is similar but the size of the case/dial is substantially different. In addition, the weight of the bracelet and the design of the clasp is different. This makes it a bit of a lottery as to what you will receive! I have uploaded a picture of the two watches side-by-side. It really is unacceptable for Rotary to be selling 2 different designs under the same model number which is why I've marked my review down one star.
Design (1) 32mm outer diameter, small in-line clasp, water resistant, normal crown
Design (2) 38mm outer diameter, fold-over clasp, water resistant, screw crown
The metal bracelet is a two tone design, and is heavier and more substantial on design 2. It is quite likely that the bracelet will need adjusting (removal of links) to match your wrist size. If you have the right tools, you can do this yourself (Search online for instructions/videos) - if you don't, take it to any competent jeweller or repair shop.
The watch(es) are both very good looking and keep good time. My preference is the smaller case size since it is lighter and the clasp is smaller. The larger watch would suit a man's wrist, but I consider the smaller one as unisex.
Keep your receipt, since these days Rotary offer a 3 year guarantee on all watches bought from official stockists. This can be extended to lifetime, but only if you have the watch serviced by Rotary every three years. Unfortunately the cost of the servicing is high and a couple of services will probably exceed the original cost of the watch. Having said that, there is no reason why even without servicing the watch shouldn't last 10+ years, if handled with care - I have one that dates from the 1990s which still runs well.
Instructions from Rotary on how to change the time and/or date of waterproof models with screw crowns:
1.Unscrew the crown in a downward/anti clockwise direction.
2.Once the screw is released, pull the crown outward gently until it clicks once and rotate the crown in a clockwise direction to change the date. (Only applicable for Date watches)
3.To change the time pull the crown once more in an outward direction gently until it clicks and rotate the crown in a clockwise direction to change the time.
4.To close the crown, push the crown inward whilst at the same time rotating the crown in a clockwise direction. It is very important to check that the crown is fully screwed into a closed position in order to ensure waterproof benefit is maintained.
