4.0 out of 5 stars Just desserts!,
Part of a series of small format cook books by Hamlyn, 200 Delicious Desserts is packed with inspiration for creating all manner of sweet dishes to end a meal. There's a nice range of desserts on offer, from old-style favourites like jam roly-poly and lemon meringue pie, through to modern staples like tiramisu, banoffee pie and sticky toffee pudding. Owners of the companion volume '200 Cakes and Bakes' might recognise the hazelnut meringue gateau!
After eight introductory pages, covering various basics including whisking cream, making meringues, working with chocolate, lining a pastry case and baking blind, the book settles into a format of double-page spreads, with a full-page image of the dessert of choice on one side, and the recipe opposite. The pictures give a good idea of what the finished article should look like.
On the whole, the recipes are fairly good at providing pointers as to how things should look or feel whilst you are preparing the various components of your dessert. There's probably not the level of detail that a complete novice would like, but if you've chalked up one or two baking successes in your career, then you're good to go with this book.
The contents page only lists the five broad categories into which the recipes are divided (Winter Warmers, Pies, Pastries and Tarts, Deliciously Decadent, Chilled Out, and Last-Minute Quickies), but there's a comprehensive index at the back which you can use to search for dishes by name or by ingredients.
So far, so good. Having tried out a few of the recipes, and read through a few more, I do have some minor gripes with regard to practical details that I would like to share. If this sort of thing bothers you, then read on!
1. Size matters!
It's quite a small book (about 14 x 17 cm). Correspondingly, the text is quite small, which may be an issue if your eyesight isn't that brilliant.
2. An open and shut case ...
You will need to use a recipe stand to keep the book open, unless you want to break the spine of the book completely. It's quite a feisty publication, and prefers to stay shut! Your recipe stand will need to be suitable for holding smaller books.
3. How many?!
Whilst the book is called '200 Delicious Desserts', what it actually contains is 100 or so recipes with pictures, and then a suggested variation for most of the recipes. I was a bit disappointed to find out that some of the 'variations' were for sauces or other such accompaniments to go with the dessert.
4. Topsy-turvy ...
The recipes themselves are not always presented in a very logical manner. For example, where dishes need to be baked in a pre-heated oven, the recipe only mentions oven settings at the point that you need to put the item into the oven. I prefer the more logical approach of 'gather your ingredients, then switch the oven on, then start preparing your dessert', which you don't find here.
5. How long?!
There is a handy sidebar on each recipe page that lists ingredients and number of portions, as well as preparation and cooking times. Be aware that the cooking time listed in the sidebar is usually a total for the whole dish (for example, the total cooking time given for 'Toffee & Banana Pancakes' on p.54 is 30 minutes, whereas the time needed to cook each pancake is about 4 minutes). It's usually best to refer to the timings in the recipe itself whilst preparing your dessert.
The review ends here, but I have included a comprehensive list of the recipes (plus alternatives) below, for really eager readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great!,
Had bought the 200 cakes and bakes before and loved it! Decided to buy this cookbook as well, and even though there are some repeated recipes, there are some really good recipes in this too! Though becareful how much sugar you put in your recipes as I find the recipes in these books are a little too sweet for my liking! =]

5.0 out of 5 stars super book!,
an excellent book! the recipes are very easy to follow and so are the variations at end of each recipe. i cant believe the cheescake recipe was as good as it was!!!!!! highly recommended even for beginners. the tips at the start are very useful, and ofcourse so too are the colour pictures of each dessert. the best thing is that the book gives a good seclection of recipes for not only the time consuming but short quick-fix recipes if you are suddenly bombarded by unexpected guests. the presentation of each recipe was very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars ok,
Nothing very special for me because I do not like chocolate and for medical reasons not able to use alcohol. But if you do not have those restrictions, go for it.
