5.0 out of 5 stars Great little book
Bought this on Kindle. It is very useful and helpful for beginners, but I have found it an entertaining read, with hints and tips for people who have been playing for a while. All in all, I am very happy to keep it on my Kindle and use it as a handy reference. I highly recommend it to any Uke player, a very informative read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book about ukes, does not pretend to be a tutorial. Proof-reading would improve it though...
As a guitar player who has recently "had a go" with a uke - actually a banjolele that a friend gave me - I bought this (Kindle version) to learn a bit about ukes and their derivatives. The book is very good value if you are looking for general info about ukes. It does not claim to be - and is not - a "how to play" tutorial, so if that is what you are after, look...

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book but not really what i wanted to know, 28 Feb 2012

I bought this book because it had a lot of good reviews, thinking this must be very comprehensive and helpful, and in many ways it is, i found some of it helpful and the rest of it very interesting, probably more interesting than helpful. Maybe this is because i already play a stringed instrument. For the price however it is definitely worth having especially if you are a novice and want more than just a "How to play" guide book

As a guitar player who has recently "had a go" with a uke - actually a banjolele that a friend gave me - I bought this (Kindle version) to learn a bit about ukes and their derivatives. The book is very good value if you are looking for general info about ukes. It does not claim to be - and is not - a "how to play" tutorial, so if that is what you are after, look elsewhere. It does offer some advice on practice techniques and a lot about what to look for when purchasing. For a general introduction, in a chatty and friendly style, it is great.

The text would be vastly improved by a bit of proof-reading - there are numerous missing words, spelling errors and incorrect grammar. This is a great pity, because the facts presented are very helpful and given in an entertaining way. I would have graded it higher apart from the textual glitches. There's a bit of repetition as well e.g. solid v laminated construction is covered twice.

The author's website looks like a very useful resource too...I will certainly be having a look through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What more could a uke beginner want?, 2 Jun 2011

Having played with the man many times (no, not in that way!!!-cheap innuendo worthy of George Formby) I can say he knows his stuff. The thing is, you don't have to be a hardened muso to appreciate the beautiful sound a uke can make, and this book shows you how to make good music in a short space of time. I'm a fanatical guitar player but the practicality and versatility of a uke has always appealed to me and it's how I started to learn chords as a kid, I got my first uke( first a cheap Hawaiian style one then a rather expensive Dallas model D George Formby banjolele) as a 9 year old, then let it drop when rock and folk guitars took over in my teens. This book and Barry himself have made me take it up again, and the marvellous range of ukes available ( described in the most practical terms in the book, both cost and quality-wise) and sound advice should make it easy to get sorted for anyone wanting to dabble. Chord patterns and song tabs are plentiful, and no matter what your musical tastes may be,you'll be surprised at just what you can play in a short space of time. Check it out and go on the blog as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Informative and essential read, for novice players, 25 Oct 2011

This review is from: What Ukulele Players Really Want To Know : The Owners Manual For Ukulele Beginners (Kindle Edition)
I am so glad I bought this book. It is written in plain English and as such is pretty much jargon free with full explanations which any beginner can understand. With only a couple of weeks playing under my belt I had already got the ukulele bug, but I was unhappy with the cheap instrument I had bought, Armed with the information I gained, I made a few minor tweaks to the "uke" and my positioning, I now have a playable instrument which will suffice until I am ready to upgrade. The previously daunting prospect of choosing the right instrument to upgrade to, from the thousands available will now be a pleasurable and considerably more informed choice, Also in the last two days my playing has improved dramatically and this has strengthened my resolve to master the ukulele. I don't think there is any publication to beat it. In short it is exceptional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect little handbook for the novice Uke player, 19 May 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great book, in an easy style that is not patronising but contains some real gems that are really helpful if you are an new or improving player. It also is a size that fits into the front pocket of my Uke's case. So I can take it with me, but the typset is a nice size to read.
