4.0 out of 5 stars A classic with a new relevance today
Lewis' 'Liar's Poker' was an instant classic upon publication. Yet it had an adverse effect: instead of being read as the critical account it was intended to be, an entire genereation of investment banker's used this book as a 'how to' guide and a prime resource of information on how to survive on Wall Street or in the City of London.

At present it attains a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Liar's Poker (Hodder Great Reads)
LIAR'S POKER is written by Michael Lewis to document his experience of a young man's college life and the maze of choosing combination of subjects in order to earn a competitive degree in the labour market. After his experience as salesman in London where an invitation to a royal banquet gave him the link to Salmon Brothers at Wall Street.
It is a story of...

One of the first books I ever read coming into the Financial Services industry and it was a riveting read. Since reading it I passed it onto my son who is also hoping to go into Financial Services. It's not as relevant today as it was 20 years ago but it still conjures up those days of excess, bravado and Mr Gekko/Wallstreet.
Good fun read if you can see beyond the grief this culture started.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insider Genius, 27 Jun 2014
25 years on, Liar's Poker remains a classic Michael Lewis book. Unlike other books by this writer, Lewis is no mere journalist, but the insider telling his own story of Salomon Brothers from the late 1970's till the post 1987 crash.

His sharp intellect is already present, and his storytelling skills blossomed with this acerbic tale of Wall Street folly. It is much easier to understand and appreciate Lewis knowing that he was a young, successful shark once upon a time. But it is his fabulous grasp of detail, vivid character portraits and understanding of the reality of finance that marks Lewis out as one hell of a writer.

I recommend all of Michael Lewis's books, as they are almost always a step ahead - and this initial effort repays re-reading so many years later. It is all so relevant. So much fun reading such a sordid tale of ego gone wild

Gripping read, and you feel when you come to the end that you understand what was going on in the financial world during the last few decades a whole lot better. Depressing though. Money is God and Immorality pays, or so it seemed then. Recommend you follow this up with 'The Big Short'

I read this book after being recommended it by a collegue and former investment banker. It's fast-paced, funny in parts, but most important of all, it's real! Not some wishy washy work of fiction, but a first hand account by somebody who has seen the banking system from the inside and can honestly comment on its virtues and numerous vices.

Easy read that explains the mindset of investment bankers in emerging bond market of 90s - rollicking read that lays the scene for why the world is in the mess that it is and why it will only get worse.

No-one writes better about the financial world than Michael Lewis. Gripping and enthralling he sheds a light on the otherwise hidden world of the Trading Floors of the eighties.
