4.0 out of 5 stars James Cracknell. No Celebrity Woosy!, 19 Sept. 2011

This review is from: Toughest Race on Earth With James Cracknell [DVD] (DVD)
This is the sort of race that I would love to have attempted if I had put in the training, and if I was in tip top condition. Alas age seems to have crept up on me and bashed me over the head with a ginormous sledgehammer, and that noble ambition lies in ashes. Today the best I can do is watch documentaries like this and dream of what might have been. I feel a bit like the old man in Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea", who dreamed of Lions. The Marathon des Sables is an endurance race with attitude. It covers a distance of 151 rugged miles and takes place over 6 days. As if this were not bad enough it is run over one of the worlds most inhospitable terrains, the vast Sahara desert in Morocco. Plenty of scope for blisters on this one!

This documentary covers the preparation for and running of the event by double Olympic Games gold medal winning rower James Cracknell, a man who I suspected was nothing more than another celebrity woosy who played up to the cameras. How wrong can you be! This guy can run a very respectable 2 hours 50 minutes for the marathon and is one of the countries top triathletes. Plus, Olympic gold medals don't grow on trees, you have to earn them. Cracknell despite being too big and powerfully built for a top runner, proves that sheer bloody mindedness can overcome a lot of obstacles. I will not spoil things by saying how he did, but he certainly gained my admiration. Granted he had the luxury of a good back up team, but even so once the race starts you are on your own. The documentary focuses on Cracknell and his combative nature which is fine. My only real criticism is that I would like to have learned a little more about the race, and seen more shots out on the course itself. Fellow runners will find this interesting, and may even be inspired to give it a bash themselves. It takes place each year at the end of March beginning of April, when at least the Sahara is not at its furnace like hottest. If you are interested in taking part in the race, then this documentary certainly makes it crystal clear as to what you are letting yourself in for.

5.0 out of 5 stars true grit, 6 May 2011
This review is from: Toughest Race on Earth With James Cracknell [DVD] (DVD)
if you have ever done any kind of traing you will love this dvd. anyone else watching it may think this man is mad. but cracknell is the kind of man that in another time would have been leading the race to the pole or climbing everest. he has the kind of sprit that is sadly lacking in most of the present genaration. watching him push his body beyond its limit is a lesson of what can be achevied with the correct mental attitude. he is a throwback to a bygone age of steely resolve, fortitude and a NEVER say die sprit.
BRILLIANT !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Williams is a star!, 17 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Toughest Race on Earth With James Cracknell [DVD] (DVD)
The sports scientist Neil William reminds me of a young bird, washing in a bath. He has an excellent knowledge of the subject matter and it is clear his subject knowledge is second to none. James is a hard core runner but would be nothing without his spots scientist! Good dvd, buy it!

James Cracknell demonstrates why he is such a tremendous athlete and a good sportsman to boot. This guy punishes himself to beyond normal to get the best out of himself. The DVD did two things for me, firstly it inspired me that I can run anything if I am physically and most important mentally prepared, secondly I need to do a lot more training to complete the MDS !!
