5.0 out of 5 stars Don't hesitate like I did!, 25 Aug 2014

This review is from: Several Shades Of Why (Audio CD)
I held out from buying this album thinking that what Mr Mascis does best is the crazy electric guitar solo. More fool me!

This is a lovely album and indeed (I'm surprised no other reviewers have mentioned this) not actually devoid of a few electric wig-outs!

This album is engulfing. Big production and you can hear what he's singing!

Kurt Vile pops up a couple of times and indeed there are times when this album sounds a bit like a Kurt/War on Drugs release (in a good way).

When I say the album is big on production what I mean is that the (partial) removal of J from his electric guitar does not mean that this is a quiet piece of musak. Far from it - the arrival of a violin and a lap steel, and even a flute, might sound at odds with a man known for songs like 'Start Choppin'' but they really work.

This album gets better and better with repeat listens and demonstrates that the man has more than one string to his erm guitar!

There are of course guitar solos here (both acoustic AND electric) but what really makes this album is the sum of its parts.

As I write this J has just announced a second 'acoustic' album ('Tied to a star') and if it's anything like this one then it'll soon be in my collection. Both of them should be owned by you too - even if you think you only like his trademark (amazing) feedback squall!

Much like Mark Lanegan reinvented himself post Screaming Trees so it is with J Mascis. Take the risk ... and be glad you did.

I approached this solo effort with some degree of concern. Mascis is best known for those overlong guitar solo's and not so much for a delicate voice - something that could be described as tortured at times. So a solo album of mainly acoustic material and much more emphasis on the voice was more than a little bit of a worry. However, like another venerable crooner Neil Young, Mascis has managed to pull this trick off reasonably well.

The guitars are strummed and plucked and sound light and airy with clear vocals and choruses. Occasionally a song will have a long outro and Mascis will be joined in the vocal department to provide some harmony and these are the tracks which seem to work the best. Is It Done is a good single and works lightly and melodically and hangs in the memory for some time after the final bars. Sometimes you are thinking of Sun Kil Moon when listening to this. Can I is a cross between Neil Young and Dinosaur Jr and works really well - its probably the only darker number that does work so well.

Mascis has produced an album here that is enjoyable, will get you nodding your head along and is suited to a nice summers day. It doesn't quite reach this listener on a deeper level than that. If you like Dinosaur Jr though you should be quite well pleased with this effort though.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of my favourite acoustic albums - sounds brilliant on (purple) vinyl (, although I'm not sure if these are related). Came before Estimated Delivery Date and is the cheapest on the internet. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Antother side of J, 4 Feb 2012

Another masterpiece by the golden grey god of guitar heroes. Mascis shows his ability to write suberb songs without big noise this time. My pick is always Dinosaur Jr but this is a great album and I hope for more of the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars feedback on no feedback, 23 Aug 2011
This review is from: Several Shades Of Why (Audio CD)
Crikey is it really that long since I purchased a Mascis related album? We are talking 'Bug' a couple of decades ago............and in a truly cliched turn of phrase....it was worth the wait. Gone is the wall of sound guitar scrawk and in it's place stripped down and damn fine tunes. Ideal for us older folk!
