A Greco paean
Wonderful book. Reminded me of studying Ancient History A Level many years ago. Not as good as the first book
The first book was suprisingly good. It started off a bit dreary, but then picked up towards the middle as they head home. The second book reminds me of David Gemmell's lion of macedon series, but not nearly as good.

Wonderful book. Reminded me of studying Ancient History A Level many years ago. Some of the classical allusions (Fidias!!) are a little heavy-handed but I think the evocation of ancient warfare is superb. It's strangely comforting to know that someone out there has really thought about what it would be like to fight in a phalanx. As with his other novels, the prose can be intensely visceral and quite often literally so. Nonetheless, another fine outing from an author who tells a gripping yarn with some taut prose and a refreshing absence of the moralising and occasionally cloying sentimentality often associated with this genre. I await the final instalment of the Macht trilogy with interest.
