I don't like a lot the compilation CD boxes about a genre because this type of releases used to be incomplete, specially when they focused in a label as in this case. Fortunately, CBS has the rights of a huge selection of old labels (RCA, Vogue, Epic...), and for that reason, and the fact that I am a Blues fan but not a completist of that genre, I purchased this box.

I thought that it was similar to the "Original Album Classics" format, however this box is far from that: each CD reproduces the original LP sleeve, but the cardboard sleeve has a high quality and a very good booklet is included with al the credits. Besides, the box itself is very well made: hard and protective.

The "imperfection" came from the musical selection: the box includes CD's from very different styles: old blues, folk, rockabilly, soul... so this is not the best form to be introduced in the genre. However, this variety permits a good point: you can listening to each CD without to be tired.

To sum up: I think that form and content are complementary in this case, and both things make this purchase a good item.

I was disappointed by this set. I had previously bought the two equivalent jazz sets and there were maybe a couple of fillers of the twenty five in each of them. Here my impression was that about half the CDs weren't that special and I wondered at the Blues label for at least half a dozen of them.

This perhaps is not a "perfect blues collection" but rather bulk package of very good CDs at bargain price. Some of CDs are not blues at all (e.g. Elvis). It's a win-win for us and Sony and hope we will see more of the
boxes coming with this price. Mini LP jackets are much more convenient to store than jewel cases. The Perfect Blues Collection Box Set Recommended.

Little Richard? Elvis Presley? Chuck Willis? Aretha Franklin? Mahalia Jackson? The Johnny Otis Show? ... The PERFECT blues collection? ... Let me recall instead a few names which (according to the compilators of this hit-and-miss collection) seem to be out of place here: Charley Patton, B.B. King, Albert King, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Sleepy John Estes, Skip James, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Tommy Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Big Mama Thornton, Koko Taylor, Blind Willie Johnson, Freddie King, Corey Harris, Otis Taylor, John Mayall, Peter Green, the other Sonny Boy Williamson, James Cotton ... If you are interested you can check my list "A basic blues collection" (it is not "perfect", "definitive" or "ultimate", but honest).

Tenho uma coleção extensa de cds, mas muito pouca coisa de blues, infelizmente. Este box ampliou e enriqueceu bastante este genêro em meu acervo.

The trouble here is who would want all this lot.It not only gives the newcomer a misguided impression of what the blues is but you sense something of a con going on here. For a start Mahalia Jackson is a Gospel singer and the Elvis one has only a minor blues content being a reissue of what was his first album.
In any case I came on here to review a 4 CD box set called Blues Collected licensed by HMV from Red Lightning. which I got for a couple of quid from HMV's Swap Shop. Each CD has the same sleeve and there are no sleeve notes just an ad for others in the Collected series. But I can't find it anywhere on Amazon.Sometimes searching for stuff is like they're taking no notice.Type in Blues Collected and the first thing that comes up is the Moody Blues.
