4.0 out of 5 stars As it says on the bottle - a 'bright' black ink., 7 Nov 2013

This review is from: Pelikan 4001 Bottled Ink - Brilliant Black 62.5ml
Firstly, this review comes from the desk of Mr Blue Black and Mr Lovely Green - I only use black ink when business necessitates, but suffice to say that my staple black is this BB by Pelikan.
The bottle is iconic, the sloping shoulders of a Pelikan ink bottle are instantly recognisable to a fountain penner - the cap has the ornate Pelikan logo atop, and the bottle itself (from this seller) is a generous 62.5 ml - a very large bottle. (If you are looking for this ink at a cheaper price, please look at the bottle size in the Amazon description - Pelikan offer the same ink in 30ml bottles that are only a pound or so cheaper - I've made that mistake personally).
The ink itself, although styled 'brilliant black' is in fact on the dark grey side of pitch black, and seems to change shading and colour with the nib size used. Through a fine nib, it seems pure black, but through my one broad nib, the shading is lovely and the very classy grey black is noticeable. Shame my handwriting doesn't lend itself to broad or italic nibs.
Free flowing, this ink lubricates all my pens perfectly and never leads to hard starts, even when the pen has been out of rotation for nearly a month.
Currently this ink is in a fine nib Mont Blanc 146, and it performs flawlessly. i have used it on a Nu 100gsm notebook, Viking Direct 100 gsm copy paper, a Leuchtturm 1917 cream notebook (again 100gsm) and as the test of tests, a Tesco school notebook apparently made of what looks like recycled kleenex tissues.
Pelikan BBlack performs faultlessly on all but the Tesco, which has a little feathering and very slight bleedthrough on the back of the page (but then again the Mont Blanc is a wet writer).
All in all, a very good, all round business black, in a large iconic bottle that will last you for ages.
Order with confidence.
I hope this helped.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent mid-priced product, and a good size., 12 April 2012

This is a slightly larger bottle than is now considered normal. At one time a common size was 2 fluid ounces (approximately 57ml), and 50 or 55ml is a modern-day equivalent.

In the past, my preference was originally for Parker's inks but, having been given a very expensive pen by a grateful client, I discovered that the ink sometimes included a few small particles and which caused ink-flow problems. I therefore switched to using the same brand ink as that of the pen, or Pelikan as a stand-by (a suggestion made by a pen specialist), if I could not obtain that brand. Both were hugely better products.

Pelikan inks are multi-filtered and may be considered free of impurity. The colours sold by Pelikan are presumably differently formulated than other manufacturers' products as some of their colours are more intense. Classically, red ink was eosin-based (a dye which under certain conditions can appear either orange or yellow) but many are now probably based on synthetic dyes and a much richer red.

Although not the least expensive brand available in the UK, Pelikan's are not significantly higher in price and, with slightly larger quantities supplied, probably very similar value for the quantity provided.

Although fountain pens are neither as commonly used or as popular as they perhaps once were, they are still used and, in certain situations, imperative as ball points and other technologies are not permitted. There are alternatives to liquid ink in a bottle, cartridges are an obvious one, but their capacity is small and they do not always work in my experience. If a pen can use a cartridge, carry a spare for emergency use but the bottle remains the prime source.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good black., 12 July 2012

This is really quite a good black ink, especially for the price. It seems a little darker than Quink, and doesn't bleed through or feather to any noticeable degree. It's not water proof, but does wash out/off fingers pretty easily. The bottle's quite nice too.

Prompt delivery and good ink; works well in my pens and gives a dense line.
Using this in two pens, one with a very wet nib, good results in both.

Good ink, dries a bit slow, but it does stay where it's been written, although you can't sometimes avoid the inevitable smudge. 5 stars without any hesitation.

Great quality ink, solved my flooding problem. The cap kept filling up giving me black hands previously but this ink stopped that as it is a little thicker. Arrived the very next day as well so great service.

I prefer writing and drawing with a good pen on lovely paper than prodding a horrid plastic screen (which is what I'm doing now), so it suits my needs perfectly! Lovely depth of colour and considerably better than similarly priced inks by other manufacturers. That's enough cos I now need to pick up my pen and do something more useful than prodding at this sodding thing all day...

Good to have some quality ink to use. Until you see the results you don't really appreciate the value of good ink
