This review is from: Cement a Novel (Paperback)
I read this book back in the 'Seventies. Gleb, who if memory recalls, is a Hero of the Soviet Union, returns to his village after the Civil War, about 1921 or so. White Guard troops still lurk in the woods outside his home. His wife has become a mystery to him: much more assertive and sexually nudge-nudge. He is given the task of reconstructing the town's cement plant which is derelict. All people do in it is make petrol cigarette lighters. He is helped to do this by a former Tsarist technician. In all this heroism I felt sorry for the couple's little girl who was fading away in an orphanage. It now seems like a literary curiosity of the early Soviet era. At the time it was the literary fanfare of a new kind of society. I seem to remember that it was rewritten as Third Period Stalinism developed and prospered to conform to new political conditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cement - socialist novel, 30 Jan 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Cement - one of the first socialist realist novels from the early 1920s. A rip roaring roller coaster of a read. War, civil war, sexual liberation, liberation of the mind, understanding the real role of work, famine, tragedy - blows all the dust out of sentimental bourgeois literature. Wonderful!
