The film opens with a ton of nasa stock footage, as we learn from the overdubbing a nasa space probe is due to return to earth, unfortunately it doesn't make it. While this is happening a group of geologists (including the part time actor soon to be excellent director michelle soavi) are planning to explore an ancient cave sysytem in america. En route to the cave we learn the probe has returned to earth with its crew missing, and a meteor shower of strange blue rocks are found everywhere, there something sinister about the rocks we soon learn after a little girl gets her face melted off! Menwhile in the cave system, the geologists have brought one of the blue rocks with them, unfortunately the rock is actually an alien creature which soon springs to life and begins infecting and killing the group one by one. Its up to the survivors to get out of the cave before the alien beastie can get them!

Ok, first things first... the film is a bit of a turd. The acting is sloppy, the alien creature is poorly realised and the whole endevour reeks of a quick cash in of a major hollywood franchise (which this is) It was quite common for the italian explotation market to make quickie 'sequels' of big budget hollywood hits, (including my fave, Exorcist 3 cries and shadows. Released on vhs briefly in the uk many years ago and made before the official exorcist 2) Nontheless like many italian exploitation flicks made in the eighties the whole thing is FUN. Stupid sure, but really a lot of FUN. I'm sure theres at least a few people out there who remember the films origional release on vhs by VTC in the uk before the nasties scare removed most of them off the shelves and this was one of the more obscure but entertaining titles out there. In all fairness if it wern't for the italian Bava film planet of the vampires the origional alien might not exist, so the italians were probably within their rights to 'borrow' back for this movie, and while the film is dodgy, the use of the ancient cave system as backdrop for the action at least manages to recreate some of the atmosphere of ridley scotts film on a low budget.
The real question is wether the film is worth shelling out for on blu-ray. As a fan of these kinds of films I would say yes. Midnight legacy prove that you can indeed polish a turd, as the film looks astonishing on blu-ray. Anyone who dislikes the heavy grain reduction seen on some arrow titles will be pleased with this as the whole package looks natural, and in spite of the occasional bit of print damage the whole film looks (and sounds) better than it probably has a right to. Its a REGION 0 disc and plays on my ps3 with no troubles. I would say that the blu-ray is probably a collectors piece more than for the casual viewer, its limited to about 50,000 copies world wide and lacks any real extras other than a dutch trailer and an effect reel. For those unconvinced by the merits of owning this on blu-ray there is a dvd release Alien 2:on Earth (Alien Terror)..Region 0.. that will probably look pretty darned good.
Overall then, if your a collector/enthusiast of some of the trashier/campier side of italian cinema the film is a lot of fun and looks amazing. If your not then save your cash and knock off 2 stars from my review.

This review is from: Alien 2 [DVD] [1980] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
My title said it all except for 1 thing.Sigourney Weaver became a firm favourite actress of mine. I also rate highly her opposite actor.
