Despite the title, this CD actually comprises twenty-two 1926 recordings by the Everglades Orchestra, plus one 1927 track by Candullo's New York Frolic Orchestra, and a 1928 track by a studio group under his leadership. They are noteworthy for the choice of material and the quality of the playing, despite the fact that for the most part they were issued on cheap dime store labels. At a time when many other white bands were recording the latest hits from Tin Pan Alley, Joe Candullo concentrated much of his output on outright jazz material, as can be seen from the tracklist. He was helped by such stalwarts of hot playing as Mike Mosiello, Leo McConville, Red Nichols, Miff Mole, Jimmy Dorsey, Goof Moyer and others, who were drafted in as available to augment the regular sidesmen.

He made his recording debut in February 1926 with Boyd Senter's "The Hobo's Prayer" and "Bass Ale Blues" (from the OM5 repertoire) for Harmony, Columbia's cut-price label. He recorded the latter number also for Edison later that year, and both feature Nick Ferrara on tuba. Indeed he seems to have had something of a penchant for cover versions, including the Fletcher Henderson composition "Stampede", and Bennie Moten's "18th Street Strut". Some numbers were revisited periodically, and three versions of "Brown Sugar" and two of "Blowin' Off Steam" are included.

The band acquits itself well, but my one criticism is that less duplication would have enabled the inclusion of other equally, or even more, deserving titles like "Deep Henderson", "S-L-U-E Foot" and "What-Cha-Call-`Em Blues". The liner note is by Mark Berresford, and although most of the tracks are acoustic recordings, Harry Coster's remastering has produced excellent results, and the CD should increase appreciation of this hot outfit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot dance and hot solos, 8 July 2013

This review is from: Blowin' Off Steam 1926-1928 (Audio CD)
Joe Candullo & His Everglades Orchestra is another hot dance band I knew in my teens when I collected original 78 rpm records. The musicians weren't the big draw card names of the 1920's, but it did offer a smaller American record company to sell to overseas markets by licensing their recordings in foreign countries for additional sales. Australia was one such country who sold these original records under a variety of nom-de-plumes in department stores across the country. It certainly begs the question then. Was the record purchased for the musical number or the artist printed on the label. Probably, the record sold because it was cheaper than the big American or English company counterparts, but the surprise is finding that Joe Candullo's Band was most proficient at playing "hot" dance music, and playing it consistently. This CD virtually gives us the entire output by this little known band. It's exciting and it's different, and of course, most enjoyable.
