5.0 out of 5 stars Meaningful and Fun - for those who like good films., 29 Jan 2010

M. Burgess "mattpburgess" (Hastings, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly a warning: This film is region 1 (for USA play), but any pc or laptop can be easily programed to play region 1 films - seriously, just pop the disc in the drive and see how easy it is!

It's a great film for those who prefer good stories and well-written characters over action and computer graphics. Joshua Jackson brings his A game to a film that is perfect for his better-class of character acting.

One Week is partly an exploration of one character's attempt to deal with cancer, and partly an exploration of the beautiful country of Canada, as he travels from one side of the country to the other on a second hand motorbike. Perfect if you enjoy armchair traveling.

DVD Extras are few, but provide a nice insight into the work that went on behind the film.

Overall I would rate it as one of those rare films that comes along that is worth paying full price for (because, annoyingly, you can't get it in the UK)

5.0 out of 5 stars A master piece!, 11 Nov 2012

I don't write reviews so I can honestly say this film was special. Perhaps it is my love of motorcycles and the freedom they bring or the the fact I am in a similar position to him. The things he goes through and the thoughts he has are spot on.

The story is essentially about a young man on hearing he has a terminal case of cancer decides to have an adventure riding East to West across Canada. He comes to realise he is in a rut living a very secure, over insured life. What he decides is to live in the present. To say more is to spoil this movie, it is about the journey both on the road and his mind. The characters are portrayed as real fully rounded people all with their faults and heaps of humanity.

For me this little known film is a masterpiece but that might just be about where I am right now, that said if you can visit that place and learn from it without a terminal illness that has got to be good! It may change your life! Go have that adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars One Week, 13 Aug 2010
Wooooooooaw! Just Woaw!!!!
I read here about the "zone 1" problem so I bought the DVD on Amazon Germany. It is a "zone 2" DVD (no extras though)

And though it's a Canadian, in Canada, I think that we can all relate to Ben's story and Joshua Jackson does his job simply but greatly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathe the air of the woods along the road to the sea..., 29 July 2011
WOWWW! This is a very very good movie. One of the best road movies I've ever seen. But one that doesn't thrill you through action and affects. IT's a realistic, a lyrical, a clear, a hope bringing, a charming, a nature loving, a film that gives you time and let's you smile. So that's a different movie than all the stupid fast food Hollywood stuff.
It's a WALDEN like movie. IF you like this movie, read HENRY DAVID THOREAU's wonderful "WALDEN" and then read his famous "Treatise on civil disobedience" which was kind of a "bible" for MAHATMA GANDHI and MARTIN LUTHER KING jr.

This movie here takes you to places and emotions we all are yearning for in these stressing and hypertonic times.
Full of green woods, open meadows, a man trying to at least live one single week like he should have before, but never did.
A man bound to die on his deperate trip (motorbiking) through CANADA to the sea.

If you like "Country" (dvd) with its beautiful soundtrack (cd/ Windham Hill) or "Witness" (with Harrison Ford)or if you love Pat Metheny's and Charlie Haden's wonderful cd "Beyond the Missouri Sky", then I'm sure you will love "ONE WEEK".
And then watch "MALCOLM" (Australia) and "ASTRONAUT FARMER", the old "ROBIN HOOD" (Errol Flynn) and of course KUROSAWA'S Russian Film "DERSU UZALA" (German UZALA der Kirgise) and "SEVEN SAMURAI".

If that's not enough you surely will love "TWILIGHT SAMURAI" (Japan) or the somewhat bloody but funny "ZATOICHI" and "HANA BI", "SONATINE" by TAKESHI KITANO.

For some really good music according to my taste, please check some of my other comments, recensions.

Don't miss this film. P.S.: JACQUES COUSTEAU's 21 Cd box, JACQUES TATI's movies (Mr.Hulot on Vacation etc.) and some of the earlier films of EMIR KUSTURICA, THEO ANGELOPOULOS and ANDREIJ TARKOVSKI along with some film WERNER HERZOG and A.HITCHCOCK or the INSPECTEUR LAVARDIN box by CLAUDE CHABROL could make you very very happy...

5.0 out of 5 stars ????region, 8 Oct 2009
By
Be careful when buying this as it states that it is region 2 when acutally when you buy it it will probably be region 1 as when I bought it. Found it really difficult to contact anybody to return the item and I have still got it but obviously it is unplayable. When doing this review I had to rate the film but I can't really as it has never been watched.
