This review is from: Naya Daur [DVD] [1957] (DVD)
A colorful story in black and white photography. A simple storyline about how wheels of industrial progress can cause unemployment rather than create it.
The movie revolves around a tonga driver(played by Dilp Kumar) leading a jovial life with his best friend (Ajit) in a sleepy little village.
Within a village is a factory run by a kind hearted industrialist (Nasir Hussein) who feels the owner and worker should have equal share of the spoils. This apple cart is however upset by the magnate's son who has just returned with higher education from an advanced country. He takes his job a bit too seriously, thinks owners should be under control, and feels machines can do better than humans. So he relieves the duties of some elderly villagers who were relying on the factory for their livelihood. Things further take an ugly turn when a bus service is commenced (with the blessings of the local business magnate (Jeevan)).The village which is now showing signs of development. Dilip, who's tonga business is hurt due to this is now up in arms with this magnate. Dilip is very popular in the village as he's sympathetic to the plights of the villagers and is willing to take up cudgels for them. With inital resistance he succeeds in encouraging other laid off men of the village to hamper the ambitions of this wealthy magnate. He impresses upon the magnate that men can be more efficient and in fact can do better production than machines. Further he throws the sensational challenge that he can drive his tonga faster than the local bus. The magnate accepts thinking that Dilip will lose. He also agrees to give back all their jobs (if Dilip wins the race)...
