4.0 out of 5 stars 3 talented bluesmen synergising well., 9 July 2001
This review is from: Showdown! (Audio CD)
A group effort with 3 talented bluesmen synergising well and exploiting the time and control that the studio affords.
The late Albert Collins has the largest reputation of the 3 players, and was in fact Cray's mentor. His trademark direct, one-note cries, charged with emotion, are audible throughout the record, while his protege's stlye is more low down, dirty and steely.
Cray is probably the better of the 2 soloists all round, but Collins's lead guitar work on "The Dream" is an album high point. Album opener "T-Bone Shuffle" pays homage to another great bluesmaster, "She's Into Something" provides what should have been a single release and "Albert's Alley" indulges Mr Collins in an own composition.
All three turn in stellar guitar work, with Copeland doing an admirable job of not being outshined by his 2 sidesmen. All 3 trade solos and rhythm parts with consummate ease and this ranks as one of the finest blues collaborations anywhere.

Collins, Cray and Copeland serve up a powerhouse of funky soulful blues sufficient that If you only wanted one electric blues record for your desert island collection, this would fit the bill. The performances by all the headliners are inspired and the choice of material entirely suited to each of the stylists. If you are expecting a session of guitar overkill then you'll be disappointed as solos and vocal turns are rationed out so that no one player dominates. The net result is an exciting yet varied and thoroughly listenable album that will definitely bear repeated trips to your cd player.

Highlights include Albert Colin's harmonica on 'Bring Your Fine Self Home, the tortured vocal by Robert Cray on 'The Dream' and not forgetting the deep blues playing of Johnny Copeland on 'Blackjack'. Where ever you look on 'Showdown' there is quality - no overplaying, no duff tracks and loads of enthusiasm. Very strong recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of my favourite blues albums, 9 April 2011
This review is from: Showdown! (Audio CD)
Three of the best blues guitar players have made a perfect album here. I've had this for many years, and Johnny and Albert have sadly passed away in the mean time. This is surely an album I hold dear next to Live at the Regal, Live WIre Blues Power, and others of the same caliber, ready and packed for the proverbial desert island. One of the best blues albums - at least one of my favourites - I have among thousands. MUST HAVE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three of the Best!, 25 Feb 2013

Now that Albert Collins & Johnny Copeland are no longer with us, this team up with young guitar-slinger Robert Cray is all the more precious. If you enjoy stylish Bluesy plank-spanking this should be right up your alley. Standout track is Cray's original "The Dream," taut and atmospheric, and the funky cover of "Black Cat Bone" is a joy. They were "into something" for sure.
