Magic Mouse battery replacement accessory:Mobee charger
on 29 February 2012
Firstly, let me assure 'reviewers' who can't be bothered or unable to write more than a sentence rubbishing this product that I don't work for Apple. I may be a fan, like millions out there, but I don't shy away from an honest review.
I bought this Mobee charger because my Magic Mouse consumes batteries too quickly. I don't use the rechargeable batteries it came with, as I have to recharge them at an inconvenient rate, preferring to use non-rechargeable Duracell batteries instead. So when I saw this product, it seemed the perfect solution. I've plugged it into the back of my Time Capsule and it sits unobtrusively alongside my iMac
This product consists basically of (a) a rechargeable battery pack which you insert into your Magic Mouse instead of its AA batteries, (b) a small white charging pad you put your mouse on when not in use, (c) a USB lead which you connect running from the white charging pad to a USB slot.
The first thing I notice on opening the box is that there are absolutely no written instructions. Although I figured out what to do easily, I had to watch a YouTube video when I encountered a problem; that being the next point of concern: some of these Mobee chargers have apparently been manufactured with their battery pack not being a precise fit to your Magic Mouse. Consequently, I couldn't get my Mouse to turn on despite charging the Mobee for four hours. It was then that I had to do a little research and found others having a similar problem. So, inspired by what others had done, I jiggled the Mobee battery pack around a little to make sure it had contact with my Magic Mouse. Hey, presto, it worked.
Others have commented on having to use a valuable USB slot on your computer to fit this kit. This is a valid point if you have a limited number of USB slots on your computer. But given that most modern computers now have a compliment of four or more USB slots and that most modern accessories which you once had to plug into your computer are now wireless, e.g. printers, this needn't be the big problem others make out. Those of us who have an iPhone or Apple Time Capsule can use the mains plug of the former, and the USB slot of the latter as connections.
I don't know how long before the rechargeable batteries pack up and not hold their charge anymore, but to maximise their life, I shall use my Magic Mouse until the Mobee battery pack drains before charging it up again. Because of the problem with the fit, I am rating this product with an initial four stars, but shall change this accordingly if and when the need arises.
The Mobee charger seems good on paper, but has a few niggles that need ironing out in practice. Buy only if you can't be bothered recharging or changing your Magic Mouse batteries frequently.
