This review is from: Mozart: Complete Keyboard Works (Audio CD)
I was tempted to buy this collection when it featured in CD Review on BBC Radio 3 in April 2011 where Sir Nicholas Kenyon enthusiastically reviewed the set. These 14 CDs are in the main taken from Brilliant Classics' 170 CD 'complete' Mozart works box set, except that we have Oort, not a variety of keyboardists, for the whole series, a definite bonus, and he is joined by Ursula Dütschler for the complete four-hand music (duets, two-pianos, and certainly including the contrapuntal works and mechanical organ arrangements). Undoubtedly it must be the finest part of that complete edition - the highest quality from a label usually known for relicensed cast-offs. Oort's playing is thoroughly characterful, with stylishly clear trills, and with an excellent subtletly of rhythmic give-and-take, appropriate for Mozart. The sonatas' inner movements are beautifully expressive; the fast movements with plenty of drive (witness the A minor sonata, K310). It is all certainly on a par with the most well-known specialist in this area - Ronald Brautigam on BIS. The quality and character of the period instruments also match - fortepiano copies of 18th-century Viennese models by Schanz and Walter. The CD Rom accompanying the set contains full programme notes and catalogue details. And this really does contain all the known Mozart keyboard works - solo sonatas, variations, dances, miscellaneous items, juvenilia, even the fantastic modulatory prelude (K624 - like listening into Mozart improvising live), and the four-hand works as stated. In short a worthy companion to your modern-instrument Uchidas and Pireses.
