5.0 out of 5 stars "..GREAT LITTLE THRILLER.."
This is a Gem of a little film in my opinion, great thriller with a good story, this is a remake of a 1970 film with the same title. The cast is great and very believable, Amber Heard is on a roll at the moment with some great movie roles, she is fantastic in this! This is not a movie that has any gore or a large amount of violence but still delivers some good thrills and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and tense, but a little familiar, 11 July 2011
When two young American girls decide to cycle through Argentina together, they stop in a little back-country town and decide to hit the town's only bar to celebrate the last night of their journey. Getting a little too drunk, they manage to get themselves in hot water and miss their ride to the airport. Stuck for things to do for a whole day, they decide to go exploring, but the drunken resentments of the night before well up and lead to a fight. Separating briefly, Amber Heard's Stephanie soon realises something's wrong when she goes back for her friend only to find her missing without a trace.
None of the townsfolk seem to want to help, everybody keeps sharing nervous glances, and a friendly American who's inexplicably hanging around the town may or may not be too friendly...
The 'tourists lost in a foreign country, out of their depth and unable to speak the language or get help' formula has been quite well trodden by everything from 'Turistas' ("Paradise Lost") on downwards, and while this is a well directed effort with good tension and some truly oustanding scenery and filming, the idea can't help feeling a little well-worn.
You're never in any doubt that Stephanie will get some kind of answer whether good or bad, and you're never in doubt that someone will turn out not to be who they seem.
It's execution has good tension, and the movie improves towards the climax. By the final scenes, the predictability has fallen away to be replaced by increasing fear and uncertainty, and it has a very well handled ending. A good thriller that may feel a little familiar for most of its length, but rewards viewing.

The cast is great and very believable, Amber Heard is on a roll at the moment with some great movie roles, she is fantastic in this! This is not a movie that has any gore or a large amount of violence but still delivers some good thrills and keeps you pulled in till the end mainly because of the nice locations and the two beautiful main stars and its an interesting idea that keeps you wanting to know how it will all end. Worth a watch for sure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tourist Babes In Peril, 25 Mar 2012

This review is from: And Soon The Darkness [DVD] (DVD)
This film (like many from TAKEN to PSYCHO) is all about outsiders in peril, in this case two young female American tourists in Argentina. The film is strong on tension and some cracking red herrings and the atmosphere should do for Argentinan tourism what WOLF CREEK did for Australia. However, the film has the usual problems associated with Dim Tourist Babes In Peril: they always do the daftest things (the lovable little scamps). If you can put up with the total failure to for example remember Rule 2 (Double Tap) then you are in for a good time. The plot was much more believable than many and the settings splendid, the resort at Lago Epecuén being especially good.

2.0 out of 5 stars And soon the darkness, 17 April 2011
This review is from: And Soon The Darkness [DVD] (DVD)
This could have been excellent but unfortunately the ending let it down. The story is great, good build up, lovely scenery. The fact that you weren't quite sure what was going to happen or when, kept you interested and involved in the characters. The story maybe was a little slow building up but it was well done, just the ending seemed rushed, like they hadn't allowed enough time at the end. Could have made the ending a little more drawn out and scary and then it would have been worth 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping Thriller That Holds You Tight Until The End., 8 Mar 2011
By
This review is from: And Soon The Darkness [DVD] (DVD)
Samantha and Ellie (Amber Heard and Odette Yustman) are two best friends who are enjoying the final day of their holiday in Argentina, ignoring the sudden disappearences of young women that are flashed in the newspapers and missing posters. When they have a arugement, the pair walk away until Samantha finds that Ellie is nowhere to be seen. With the help of mysterious Michael (Karl Urban), they must find her friend before darkness falls. It has some wonderful scenery of Argentina, great pefomances from Heard and Urban who is drop dead gorgeous. The tenison is always there, gripping the viewer tight until the credits roll. While it won't win awards or be the best film ever, And Soon The Darkness is one to check out for friday or saturday night viewing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Set expectation levels to 'modest', 9 Jan 2011
By
'And Soon the Darkness' is a 2010 thriller directed by Marcos Efron, based upon a French 1970 film of the same title.

Two young American girls, Stephanie and Ellie, are on a leisure cycling trip through Argentina. The bike trip takes a turn for the worse when Ellie disappears. Stephanie desperately searches for her friend, and she is joined by Michael, an American, who claims to be looking for someone who disappeared years ago. But is all as it seems?

This movie plays on one's worst foreign trip nightmares, a la 'Midnight Express', ie abductions, language barriers, sexual slavery and dodgy local law enforcement.

The drop-dead-gorgeous-rising-young-star Amber Heard is Stephanie, Karl Urban is Michael and Odette Yustman plays Ellie.

This movie has quite ambitious pretensions, and some of the locations in Argentina are spooky and great. Ultimately though, the film never quite takes off and it is only moderately entertaining (for me, to be a guy and say honestly: the eye candy quotient value here with Heard and Yustman is pretty high and a plus too).

2.0 out of 5 stars And Now The Tediousness, 29 May 2014
This review is from: And Soon The Darkness [DVD] (DVD)
And So the Darkness didn't do much for me sadly. Its a thriller in the same vein as Paradise Lost/Turistas and Wolf Creek but both of those are better films. If you love those films you'll maybe get something out of this but it won't show you anything you haven't seen before.

The set up is basic but good enough. Two girls are on a cycling holiday in Argentina when one of them vanishes, the other then sets out to find her. A few different shady characters are introduced early on as possible culpritswwhich I thought would lead to a good whodunit. It's a shame that this is largely wasted and the film ticks along with a surprising lack of suspense or tension towards a predictable conclusion.

It's well acted and the scenery looks great but overall it was an underwhelming experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars RUBBISH, 29 Mar 2014
I very quickly found the two cycling ladies to be annoying. Particularly the dark haired one. Their acting is laughable. I quickly abandoned my attempt to watch this dross. I think you could say I disliked this film.
The original 1970 film is superior. I would give that one 3.5 stars.
