5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Historical Yarn

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the worst
There are some truly terrible books of this sort being written and published on Kindle these days. This is not one of them, and reading it was entertaining, and by no means wearisome

If you like an historical novel based on factual events then this is a good read. The story starts with the son of the local lord, and a poor boy who is a farrier and looks after his grandfather. Fate brings them together. The lords son is commissioned into the army, and eventually the young farrier enlists in the army. The story gives a little insight into the army of the time, when rank and privilege were what mattered. The book relates their adventures in the days of Lord Wellesley, and the subsequent Portugese campaign. An enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent new contender for the 'Sharpe' crown, 16 Sep 2014

Walls of Jericho - Jonathan Hopkins Kindle Edition

First class start to what promises to be an excellent series. The very under-strength cavalry of the British army in Portugal and Spain during the Napoleonic wars has never been given the credit for the major part that they played in the six years of campaigning between 1808 and 1814. This novel follows the early service of a regiment of light dragoons in 1808 and the fortunes of two cavalrymen, friends from childhood, one a corporal and the other a junior officer and the difficulties that their friendship throws up.

Mr Hopkins has come up with what promises to be a really first class contender to fill the gap left when the career of Richard Sharpe ceased to be chronicled. The series is well researched with few historical flaws the fictional characters fitting seamlessly into the historical background without any noticable bending of history to fit the story.

I had already ordered the next volume in this series when I was half way through this book.... that alone speaks for itself. I am now looking forward to the next enstallment.

4.0 out of 5 stars And they're off!, 30 Jan 2013

This review is from: Walls of Jericho - A Cavalry Tale (Kindle Edition)
This is sub-titled "A Cavalry Tale" and is the first in a projected series of Napoleonic stories. It gallops off to a good start. The book is in two parts - the first setting up the relationship of the two main characters in England, then moving to Portugal at the beginning of the Peninsular War.
I really liked the first half. Hopkins knows his horses and is very good on country-lore, giving an enjoyable sense of place.
Then it's off to war and an inevitable visit to Sharpe-land. We get enjoyable baddies, wilful heroines and a good impression of the fog of battle.
The series and the war are underway - it will be fascinating to see how Wellington's campaigns are seen through the eyes of these engaging cavalrymen.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent First Novel well worth the price, 29 Dec 2012

This review is from: Walls of Jericho - A Cavalry Tale (Kindle Edition)
I bought this book based on its Kindle Price and the subject matter, having never heard of the author before. It has turned out to be probably the best 77p I have spent on Kindle to date. A well written and enjoyable tale, a little bit a la 'Sharpe on Horseback' but this in no way detracts from its excellent characters and plot. I hope we do not have to wait 3 years for the next one. Well done Jonathan, more please.
