5.0 out of 5 stars Just Superb!, 9 April 2011
This review is from: Sonic Sci-Fi (Audio CD)
Includes some of the finest movie soundtrack music ever recorded. Bernhard Herrman and the Barrons are the absolute masters and if you're not all that familiar with their work this is the CD for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two great soundtracks for two favourite films!, 19 May 2012
This review is from: Sonic Sci-Fi (Audio CD)
Herrmann is a genius and longtime hero of mine and the Barrons are great too (though I don't know much about them). This is a keenly-priced set with really worthwhile extras. Put this double C.D. set on and hide behind the sofa!

I have always loved both of these films and the music for both of them is quite
different in style from each other. The Day The Earth Stood Still with the futuristic
theramin sound and orchestrated pieces is as much a part of the film as the acting,
itself.
The music for Forbidden Planet is more like a collection of noises and sound effects
but is also a massive part of the film too.

Forbidden Planet is one of the truly great, original science fiction films. The reason it is so great is, in no small measure, down to the superb, electronic soundtrack by Bebe and Louis Barron. It gives me much pleasure to now own that exquisite soundtrack, a fabulous piece of early electronic music. Also included is Bells of Atlantis which sets the poetry of Anais Nin (actually read by her!) to music by the Barrons.

And, what's more, on top of this, we get a whole other disc of Bernard Herrman with both his Theremin-soaked orchestral soundtrack for The Day the Earth Stood Still (another classic film) and his Outer Space Suite.

This is a wonderful double-CD to own and at a great price. My single grumble is with the title and the use of the ugly term,Sci-Fi. Still, I can't bring myself to take a star off for that marketting sin.
