5.0 out of 5 stars Cavalcade of Variety & Stars on Parade
Two very good films very remeniscent of the sound 9.5mm films as issued by Pathescope in the past. I paticularly enjoyed the links created by Rob Wilton and watching Peter Brough with a different dummy prior to his adoption of Archie Andrews. Two nostalgic films.

3.0 out of 5 stars a real rareity
Both of these films may be old and creaky but are full of interesting acts from the final days of the english music halls
Beware as the copies are full of joins...but still worth a view

Bought it as my distant relative G.S.Melvin appears in one of the sketches. The collection is amazing, but makes you realise just how times, humour wise, have changed! Thoroughly recommended it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Educating Archie, 2 Jun. 2013

Lovely to see Peter Brough before his puppet was called Archie, who then went on to star in a very popular radio show during the early fifties. Mind you, he never appeared to be that good a ventriloquist - not necessary on radio, I suppose.

And then theres Arthur Lucan, with his daughter. Amazing how they became so popular. All the acts are interesting. Trouble is theres quite a few DVDs in the series so best to go for the least expensive to start with. (this was when purchased)

A film and a show featuring the stars of old music hall from over 70 years ago. Stars on Parade is a collection of acts joined together in the style of a film. Cavalcade of Variety is a stage show with some of the biggest music hall stars of the day. The quality of Stars on Parade is excellent considering its age. Cavalcade features a few names that are still occasionally mentioned today (Peter Brough of 'Archie Andrews' fame, and Billy Cotton) but has obviously had archive issues as there are lots of jumps and sections missing, however, it shouldn't spoil your enjoyment too much as the acts provide plenty of laughs. Personally I prefer Cavalcade, it's a lot of fun, though you can get quite critical of it - eg: is there really an audience watching in (there's no laughs during the acts). the highlight of Parade is the police chief and the lady who has poisoned her husband, and watch out for the most cruel magician you'll ever see. It's fascinating to watch, fun, and we're very lucky to be able to see shows like this from years ago today. Although it was War time I'd have been quite happy to be there.
