This review is from: British Pathe Presents the FA Cup Finals [DVD] (DVD)
The first thing to mention about this fine DVD is that it is narrated by Barry Davies which already puts it a cut above most football releases.

Secondly it contains nearly three-and-a-half hours of Pathé newsreel footage with match action from every FA Cup final played from 1920 to 1969 except for 1924 and 1937. Footage from Newcastle's 1924 semi-final victory against Manchester City (wrongly identified as United in the commentary) is included though.

Be warned that camera coverage is less than ideal in the pre-war years and not every goal from that period is captured. The quality improves greatly post-war.

Barry Davies narrates over the largely silent footage up until the 1933 final when the original Pathé commentary is allowed to take over and Davies reverts to merely introducing each clip.

As the years go by the newsreels get progressively longer with decent amounts of time allocated to each final. In the 1950s there's an average of around six minutes per game and even longer in the '60s. Colour match footage first appears for the 1961 Tottenham-Leicester match. The newsreels remain in colour from then on apart from 1964's final between West Ham and Preston which is in black and white.

It's not only match action on the disc though - there are also numerous victory parades and a few other charming oddities.

A high quality production.

A great DVD to while away a Sunday afternoon. The early clips are of course somewhat limited but still sufficient to give a flavour of the event. The later (especially) post war years are covered in much more depth and the game coverage is pretty good with virtually all the goals being shown along with some game highlights. Its also nice to see the post final parades etc. Overall it is a DVD which should be in every football fans collection.
