Not up to her usual standard

I agree with the minority of other reviewers who judged this novel inferior to the earlier ones in the series -- and, come to that, to the Vera Stanhope series. I'd only add to their remarks that we're introduced early on to a large cast of characters, members of an extended family, three generations of grandparents, parents, cousins, brothers and sisters, all usually referred to by their Christian names alone so it's difficult to fix in one's memory who's who. A list of characters to refer to, along with the map of the islands provided, would have been helpful. And a glossary of Shetland dialect words would also have been appreciated. I kept stalling on words such as yoal, bod, reestit, dee, peerie, flot, peerie, planticrub, fiscal (public prosecutor in the Shetlands), most of them not in my OED so I had to resort to Google...
