1.0 out of 5 stars mis-titled and lacks balance
There are points here regarding King James and the history of England at the time however I feel the DVD is mis-titled.

It focuses hugely on KIng James. I would have loved to have known more about why it is considered such a fantastic translation. What where the less accurate/powerful translations like in comparison? Only one example is given...

This is a well crafted historical document, weaving together the intricacies of the political and religious context that gave birth to the King James's Bible. And like John Rhys-Davies says we all have a copy somewhere under our own roofs.

'KJB - The Book That Changed The World' provides a majestic journey through the corridors and rooms once traversed by the very characters that shaped the culture and society, both in Scotland and England, of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The cinematography is spell-bounding, meticulously woven together in editing to highlight the finely detailed script, presented by John Rhys-Davies. The storytelling pulls together, seamlessly, the dramatic moments of reconstruction, with academic insight from contemporary scholars. For those fascinated by costumes from late Elizabethan, Jacobean and Stuart Periods, this will be a feast. A highly commended feature length documentary and reconstructions by producer and director, Norman Stone.

It is great to see a film present a well-balance account of the spiritual developments of England and Scotland through the events that led to the Authorised English translation of the Holy Bible.

If, like most households in the UK you either possess a copy of the Bible, or have access to one, then take it down, dust it off and cherish the history and struggles that brought it to you.
This DVD charts the germination of the commission to produce a once-and-for-all translation of the scriptures into English by James 1st. It portrays the king in a favourable light, despite the many enemies his outspokeness made. His lonely childhood and strong minded tutor, bringing to the throne a man who managed to weld the rival protestant factions into a team who would bring into light something truly wonderful, the word of God in English - and what English!
John Rhys Davies presents the whole drama-documentary with conviction and enthusiasm.

Negative point: In spite of his massive earlier input into the text, William Tyndale gets no mention.

Apart from that, a wonderful resource in this hope-starved world, that mircales can and do happen.

Watch the DVD, then read the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story behind the word of God, 3 Dec. 2010

`A book whose influence has been felt around the world for the past 400 years and claims to be the living word of God.' is how John Rhys-Davies introduces this latest offering from Bafta award winning director Norman Stone. And an epic tale it is.

For 90 minutes I was drawn into history in this well paced, fact filled journey to discover the origins of the King James Bible. Through interviews, narration and dramatic reconstructions Norman takes us on a religious and political rollercoaster ride with more intrigue, villainy and larger than life characters than a Hollywood blockbuster - and this actually happened!

Dramatic and stunning real life locations, exquisite costumes and expert opinions are woven together by John's narration to create a tapestry of history we should all know about.

KJB is a tale created by a master story teller that deserves a place in your DVD collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD BOOK, 4 Mar. 2011
This review is from: KJB-The Book That Changed The World [DVD] (DVD)
The King James Version is the venerable granddaddy of Bible translations stretching all the way back to 1611. As part of the 400 th. Anniversary celebrations this drama/documentary, KJB The Book that Changed the World traces the origin of an historical project. This is a swashbuckling saga of an ailing Queen who names her successor with her dying breath, a solitary teenager steeped in Biblical and Calvinist thought ushered to the throne and a church divided by doctrinal and political intrigue. Against this turbulent background the idea for a new and scholarly translation of the Bible was hatched in the mind of the young King. Brilliantly narrated by John Rhys-Davies and under the masterful direction of Norman Stone (`Shadowlands'), `KJB' never flags as it unfolds this gripping story. Elisabeth's successor, Scottish King, James VI had a keen sense of Divine providence over his life and the task of organising a new translation of the Scriptures became his life's passion and subsequently his enduring legacy. In its scope and depth there had never been anything quite like it. Archaic though the language of the KJB may seem to modern readers, in its time it was cutting edge and innovative. This presentation helps us to appreciate what a milestone that enterprise represented.

Eye opening context behind the history of how this translation came about. All those school boy years joking about 'Ye olde Anglish' wording ... it has now really come to life for me.

This film is beautifully constructed, well presented and skilfully acted. There is a wealth of background given which puts the development and publication of the KJV into its historical as well as cultural background. Obviously, the director had to be selective in choosing what to emphasize but, in so doing, I was stimulated to research further. It is a most impressive work.
