5.0 out of 5 stars Malian acoustic gorgeousness, 6 Feb. 2011

This review is from: Sahel Folk (Audio CD)
Sidi's last CD Hoga was a wonderful but dreadful quality recording of Malian northern style blues tinged music, in a very similar style to the late and very great Ali Farka Toure. Worth checking out and the poor recording quality actually adds to that far away feel!

Now, many years on comes Sahel Folk, a wonderous, crystal clear recording of acoustic gorgeousness. 9 tracks and 50 minutes of laid back finger picking and restrained nasal floating vocals. This is 'world music' at it's best. No concessions to a world market, no straining to make it up to date with current banal styles.

The music is unhurried and confident, swinging softly with an insistent but laid back beat. Each track features Sidi on vocals along with another vocalist. The instruments are acoustic guitars and the kurbu (which they say is a traditional guitar) and the kuntigui (monocorde guitar). To me these sound like the twanging sound of the n'goni made famous by Bassekou Kouyate and n'goni ba.

Brilliantly accessible goregousness from a different time and place. Love it!
