5.0 out of 5 stars You've gotta like a bit of Derren Brown.,
This review is from: Derren Brown Live Collection [DVD] (DVD)3 great DVDs and the shows are unmissable. Just when you think the tricks (or illusions) are over, another facet appears. How on earth does a man acquire such talent? Well, it's probably lots of practising, whatever it is, I think anyone would find Mr Browns shows to be amazing and I can't recommend them enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely mind blowing!,
This review is from: Derren Brown Live Collection [DVD] (DVD)Without doubt, Derren Brown's live shows are the highlights of his career. If you are a big fan of his work already then this box-set epitomises his talents- even if you're not a fan it will mesmerise you. If you have only seen Derren's TV shows, I would certainly indulge in the live shows: to me they are even better, as they are much longer and involve a spectrum of his talents. Derren seems to blossom on stage, performing cheekily, skillfully and with a massive amount of pizzazz. His stage presence is renowned, and after watching An Evening of Wonders for around five minutes, I found myself astonished. There is not a split-second where the audience is not completely enthralled in the theatrical world that he, seemingly effortlessly, creates.
As an avid watcher of anything concerning Derren Brown I had seen all three shows before buying the product, and the extras on "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and "An Evening of Wonders" contain deleted scenes from the shows which I'd never seen before and were amazing. An interview with Derren on Something Wicked This Way Comes is a very welcome extra, which is perfect to indulge in after watching the main show, and includes his views on the performance, and a rare appearance from Andy Nyman. I was lucky enough to have seen "Enigma" live last year, and the Enigma DVD included in the set features almost everything involved in the show, start to finish. Even though I'd seen the shows, watching them again made them (somehow?) even more enchanting, and the extras are marvellous. Every show has a unique and equally extraordinary ending, which you will find yourself rolling over and over in your head for days afterwards. Derren constantly provides the unthinkable, pushing the boundaries of stage shows and magic incredibly far.
In ENIGMA, a tone plays, "hypnotising" the audience, and leaving a few compelled to stand- the bizarre scenes that follow are simply bewitching. During the show, Derren often describes to the viewer what he is doing, and this shows the extent of his abilities- just like Penn & Teller, describing this often makes what is happening even more unbelievable. I believe that he is truly one of the best show-people of our time, and the ending to ENIGMA is the pinnacle of his talents, simply fantastic.
It includes Derren's incredible ability to control his pulse, walk on glass, perform the "Oracle" act, control other peoples' behaviour and choices and create a simply amazing atmosphere in every single show. Every act is baffling and Derren's dramatic performances leave you stunned. Another DVD which is simply amazing, and one of my favourite Derren Brown DVDs is "The Specials" including The Heist and Seance, which is extremely interesting for people fascinated by psychology and human behaviour and features Stanley Milgram's famous experiment, Derren Brown style! Derren Brown - The Specials [DVD]
Derren describes his acts as fusing "magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship" and I would definitely add comedy to that list as during all three shows on the DVD I found myself laughing until my cheeks hurt. The collection is also perfect for astonishing your friends who are new to Derren's work- mine were left dumbfounded. I'd say that all of Derren's work is worth watching, and I've yet to see anything quite like it- truly unique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bewitched, bothered and bewildered,
This review is from: Derren Brown Live Collection [DVD] (DVD)This box set is a glorious tryptich of Derren Brown's live shows. His unique fusion of expert conjuring, hypnosis, subtle suggestion and baffling memory feats are all snugly wrapped up in the most engaging and entertaining showmanship. As incredible as his tv work is, it is on stage where Derren is at his most mesmorising. Indeed, in one of the interviews featured as bonus material, Derren himself professes to enjoying the freedoms afforded by the theatre setting and how his beautifully crafted evenings of mind boggling entertainment become further honed over many repeat performances. This is echoed in the development and fine-tuning of his presentation skills over the years and the three shows, which is both interesting and rather endearing.
Certainly Derren seems to be in his element on stage, effortlessly commanding the rapt attention of his spellbound audiences, and his enthusiasm and delight are infectious. His undeniable charm and charisma carry you through each live show and the surprising variety of acts, from the light-hearted and fun, through the dark and frankly quite unpleasant and each time culminating in a jaw-dropping, awe inspiring finale which will have you helplessly grasping for explanations and happily failing to fathom it out!
Derren is a master craftsman and makes it a pleasure to be fooled by his disgustingly talented array of skills and techniques. Even on the tantalisingly rare occasions when he explains how certain acts were accomplished, this somehow serves to confound us even more, as the layers of complexity are peeled away to reveal just what astonishing depths lie behind each stunt. Similarly, these fabulous live shows lose none of their wonder upon repeat viewings, but rather allow the opportunity to try and get your head around what on earth is really going on or spot things you missed first time but, more often than not, simply marvel anew at just how infuriatingly clever and deliciously bamboozling Derren Brown is.
He will surely leave you, like me, bewitched, bothered and very happily bewildered!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely memento,
This review is from: Derren Brown Live Collection [DVD] (DVD)As someone who has seen two of the three stage shows in this box set live, I ordered it mainly as a memento of the shows I'd seen. I must say, however, that the DVD of the show I missed -- Something Wicked This Way Comes, the first in the set -- makes me wish I had actually seen it live.
If you haven't seen these shows live, prepare for a different side of Derren Brown than the one seen on television. In his stage shows, he seems a bit closer to the classic Victorian vaudeville trickster, with acts that range from physical 'geek tricks' (in Something Wicked This Way Comes) to dancing tables and mass mind reading (An Evening of Wonders), as well as a spirit cabinet (Enigma) and lots of audience participation throughout the shows. All three shows close with a bang, so to speak. The ending of Something Wicked is hilariously funny, whereas the closing routine to Enigma is truly amazing.
The one missing star is due to the fact that while bonus scenes are included on the first two DVDs, Enigma is sadly limited to the hour-long excerpt that was shown on tv. While that hour is filled with many wonderful tricks, it does leave out some of my favourites from the actual stage show that I had hoped to see included as bonus material.
In closing, if you've seen the stage shows, these DVDs are a lovely memento. And if you haven't, they may well convince you to go and see Derren Brown's upcoming tour!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!,
This review is from: Derren Brown Live Collection [DVD] (DVD)If you are a fan of Derren Brown, you will love the live collection. It shows him at his best, interacting and joking with his audience. I always find he is a lot better in his live shows. He thrives in a live environment. My personal favourite is 'Something wicked this way comes'. The glass act makes you squirm, in a good way.
The 3 DVDs are more than worth the price paid for this. A must buy for Derren fans but also a good introduction to any one who have not seen his act before.
