5.0 out of 5 stars The Grand Organ St Pauls Cathedral, 18 April 2011

This review is from: The Grand Organ of St Paul's Cathedral, London (DVD with bonus CD) (DVD)
What can one say, other than what an excellent Priory recording this is. The selection of music is easy on the ear, my wife who has little respect of my Classical Organ music collection actually enjoyed some of the more popular pieces "Voluntary in C Minor" being one of them. Most impressionable is the editing of this DVD, when Simon Johnson was playing Variations De Concert which is a difficult piece to play, his footwork on the pedals is a sight to see. At recitals here in Grafton Cathedral NSW Australia our organist attempted this piece, he did a good job of it , but was swathed in perspiration on it's completion. A wonderful programme and a wonderful DVD. I definately give it 10 out of 10. Surround sound is the way to enjoy this DVD to it's maximum a friend of mine odered the DVD after watching mine most impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Production, 9 July 2012
This review is from: The Grand Organ of St Paul's Cathedral, London (DVD with bonus CD) (DVD)
I have most of Priory's series of DVDs showcasing various Cathedral organs in England, and this is certainly one of the best among them.

Simon Johnson makes the most of the fantastic instrument at his disposal - and the programme is wide and varied. The highlight is probably the Cocker Tuba Tune, given how many Tubas he can use! However, with these DVDs I find the bonus material, particularly the organ tour, of almost greater interest than the main programme itself, and Johnson tells the organ's story in a most engaging and fascinating way while giving us some excellent Harry Potter based improvisations!

Overall, an excellent production from Priory, and a must-have for organ buffs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance and Recording, 28 Nov. 2011
This review is from: The Grand Organ of St Paul's Cathedral, London (DVD with bonus CD) (DVD)
An excellent DVD production from Priory once again, and a very polished and inspiring performance from Simon Johnson. A fantastic rendition of the Firebird Suite was just one of the many thrilling tracks awaiting the listener. I liked the bonus tracks and in particular the organ demonstration. This was very good and very watchable, particularly for anyone whom may not be familiar with the complexities of a Large Pipe Organ. It would also make a good introduction to the organ for children especially with the little musical extracts from Harry Potter used to demonstrate the various resourses of this impressive instrument.

This DVD was my first opportuinity to hear the new Dome Tubas, Oh dear! What a great, great shame that the famous Willis II Dome Tubas (Circa 1900) were allowed to be replaced by new reeds. They sound very loud, free and brassy, but Willis Tubas they definitley are NOT! One can only assume that the old smoother more refined Willis tone was not to the taste of the present Organsit/Organbuilder. One could never argue that this instrument was short of free/brassy reed tone in its current state. I'm saddened that this great instrument is gradually losing more and more of it's Willis voice with the passing of time. It's high time there was some form of preservation legislation in this country to prevent great historic organs and pipework being lost to the passing fashions and tastes of Organists/Organ builders.

Overall, this is a great disc... buy it!

This review is from: The Grand Organ of St Paul's Cathedral, London (DVD with bonus CD) (DVD)
This DVD and CD from Saint Paul's has one of the finest visual components I have seen, including stunning photography taken from the Whispering Gallery, dwarfing the organ console which has been positioned below. However I felt the repertoire was a bit patchier than some of the others. High points include a slow movement from Widor's 9th Symphony, a Mendelssohn Prelude and Fugue, and Karg-Elert's Harmonies du soir, which has some very beautiful images of the cathedral viewed as part of the cityscape. The Variations de Concert by Joseph Bonnet show what the organ can do and have a big impact in the huge space. It sounds a bit like Mendelssohn, but was actually written in 1906 - not that this makes it any less appealing. A bit later comes Herbert Brewer's Marche Héroïque with its memorable second subject, sounding anything but second-rate. Personally I like Barber's Adagio a bit less and was not sure about the decision to show a photo of 9/11, which seemed too direct a reference for the context. The Petr Eben didn't quite get the recital back on track, for me at least, although others may enjoy these works a lot more. What everyone is likely to agree on is how well filmed it is, as with this whole series of organ DVDs, and Simon Johnson is clearly an excellent organist.
