Far from being just another biography of a Hollywood icon this is a surprisingly edifying piece of work to read as well as being entertaining.
The book is a well researched, masterfully written and balanced account of a complex man who was much more than just a film star. An actor whose minimalistic and authentic approach to playing characters on screen was off-set by real life indulgences, often in relatively excessive measures, whether it was cars, bikes, or women.
I read another biography of Steve on a long haul flight to Australia years ago that was good but this was much better. I found the final chapters about his life especially moving and it gave very good insight into the dark-side of fame and celebrity. People who desire fame above all else should take note.
