It's been a busy year for Amy Macodonald with the release of A Curious Thing earlier this year and touring almost constantly for the rest of year. Fortunately she found time to travel to Luxembourg to record a set with the German Philharmonic Orchestra and it this that this album celebrates.

This two disc set consists of the original album (A Curious Thing) plus 12 songs from the orchestrated set, replacing the 2007 Barrowland Ballroom concert that was released in the deluxe version back in March this year.

Like the recent setlist for her tour, the second disc contains tracks from both This Is A Life and A Curious Thing, ensuring that there is something for everyone. While some tracks already had string arrangements in the original studio versions, hearing them played by an orchestra makes them take on another life. It makes them a little special to hear.

Everything tells you that this arrangement probably shouldn't work but it does and does beautifully. There is only one draw back for this release and that is that, with a deluxe version having already been released and some may see no point in buying just to get the orchestrated versions. Maybe if it had been a live CD and DVD set, it would have been better and possibly packaged as a separate album, a little like Sting's Symphonicity. Still a good listen for any fan.

As I already own A Curious Thing my main reason for purchasing this was to hear disc 2 Special Orchestral Edition. Amy gives an excellent performance and the orchestra add an extra dimension to her music. Special mention for her wonderful band and also to the audience for creating the type of atmosphere that makes you want to get tickets for Amy's future concerts. There are no fillers on this cd and I have no desire to skip any tracks so that must speak volumes for Amy's music. Disc 2 (Special Orchestral Edition) is worth the cost of the cd alone so to also get Disc 1 (A Curious Thing) is really exceptional value. I am sure anyone who purchases this will get a great deal of pleasure from it.

I have always wanted to own a C.D Album from Amy and have never got around to buying it but having heard all of the tracks on offer here and a lot of them recorded near my home. I think this young woman is a fantastic talent with such a distinctive unique vocal quality. I think she has so much to offer. I especially liked the added depth to the sound from the Orchestra.A great Buy. I would Recommend this to all. If you've never heard any of Amy's music before give this one a try and you won't be disappointed.10 out of 10

Excellent cd and the bonus live album (which gets more play than the original) is superb too. Amy MacDonald rocks !

I bought this album on the premise that it was only going to cost me 75p more than the album without the bonus cd. WHAT A BARGAIN! The album it self is fantastic, lyrically brilliant and the musical orchestrations are above and beyond a lot of other music out there at the moment, anyway, it came round to the listening of the orchestral cd, every hair on my body stood up!!! I do not listen to music quietly and for volume and power orchestra's are the thing to listen to. Combine it with Amy's songs and vocals and its one of my most listened to cd's of the last 3 months. BUY IT, you wont be disappointed. 10 out of 10 Miss MacDonald, fantastic idea for a cd.

A very good album a two disc set with the original Curious Thing and the Orchestral CD combined. Some great string and wind sections that complement the original versions, some songs from the first album mixed in, a fantastic ending with Lets Start a Band.

I only recently discovered the music of Amy MacDonald, but so deeply did I fall in love with her voice I ordered all three of her albums right away. This, her second record, is by far her strongest in my opinion. She built upon the strengths of her first album, added a bit of spit and polish (not too much mind you), and produced a great record. Everyone talks about This Pretty Face, but real highlights include 'Spark', 'An Ordinary Life', and 'The Next Big Thing'. Clearly, this young woman was struggling with her new-found success. Often that leads to pretentious 'pity me because I am rich and beautiful' dreck, but she managed to thread the needle and put together poignant meaningful songs.

I also highly recommend this special edition. The orchestral versions of her songs on the second disc is absolutely worth it. Some of them are misses and don't hold up to the studio version, but the vast majority are great. I don't want to say they are better than the studio versions, they just add a different dimension to them. Sometimes I throw on the first disc, sometimes the second, depending on my mood, and they are both great.

I have to confess I am a great fan of Amy MacDonald and have been listening to her music for a few years now. She is definitely one of the biggest talents to emerge in recent years! Yet I had no idea that this recording of a concert with orchestra was available. It's from a gig recorded in Luxembourg on 17th October 2010 with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonic conducted bu Gast Waltzing, who also arranged and orchestrated the songs. There's some great stuff on here, all beautifully done - as if the songs had always meant to have been played with an orchestra. If you're an Amy MacDonald fan, this is an essential addition to your collection - even if you already own "A Curious Thing" it's well worth buying for the concert alone. Amy, please do this again, because I would love to see you performing live with an orchestra.

I love "This is the Life" and hoped this album would be as good, but in my view it falls short. It's ok but feels a bit superficial both in terms of lyrics and music.

No 'Mr Rock and Roll' on this album.

I have liked Amy and her incredible voice from the early days, the passion she puts into every word she sings is quite rare these days. But I wasn't sure about he whole Orchestra thing, But Oh boy it totally works, her voice loses none of its Folk-Rock Quality and the orchestral interpretation of the tracks is pretty near perfect. it's an " I'm having a Rubbish day get a coffee/Whisky and put this on full volume" CD. and its a good CD for the car, just about everyone I have given a lift to has loved it. Hope this helps, give it a try.
