I love Karajan's earlier stereo recordings of Tchaikovsky's 5th for its relentless power and intensity, but as I grow older, I've come to love his late digital recording with VPO as well. At first I had an impression that the dramatic contrast in the music was a bit too understated compared to his earlier recordings, but after repeated listening, I realized Karajan was after something else...it is hard to describe with words, but it's there in the subtle way the slow movement is phrased or in the beautiful way strings sing in the outer movements. A sort of Autumnal glory before cold winter and death, poetically put.
