4.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful...but slow
Bach's Art of Fugue is one of the summits of western music. Hesperion XX's performances of these sublime pieces contain some of the most beautiful and evocative sounds I've ever heard from period instruments especially from the wind, and brass (the cornett being particularly memorable). This is too leaden to be recommendable, but there are some good things in it -- for example Contrapuncti 12(a) and (b) and 4.

It sounds lovely, it's introspective. But mostly it lacks joie de vivre.

You're better off with Bach, J.S.: The Art of Fugue; A Musical Offering or Bach: Art of Fugue if you want an orchestrated version, I think.

My slight caveat is that the music is played slowly, which is usually more a fault of tradition Bach performances than the authentic style. I feel there could be more vigour in certain of the fugues (though not taken to the extreme of Reinhart Goebbels!) and the playing is at times perhaps too deliberate. Still, all admirers of this masterwork should hear it.
