The movie was written, produced, and starred Curtis 50 cents Jackson as a Detroit gun dealer. In the first scene there is a strip joint with pole dancers who keep their clothes on. A hit is done outside the joint as Jackson kills his competition in the drug trade. The Mexican Cartels need lots of high powered guns, which Jackson claims he will provide. His connection is the pretty Annalynne McCord who also has sex with Jackson, the author of the script. Meanwhile Val Kilmer is being released from prison and goes to work for Jackson, a man who he once saved in a street shoot out. Danny Trejo is on the screen for about 3 minutes, nothing to write home about.

The cops along with their rival, the ATF are after the gun dealers. Their role was done rather poorly while the thugs was done well, a reflection of what 50 cents really knows well. Hip-hop background music, no surprise. No nudity, quick sex scene, multiple MF and F bombs.

Please don't watch this if you're a fan of Val Kilmer because he has really gone to seed, overweight, bloated and with shoulder length hair he sleepwalks through this movie. This is a shame because Curtis '50 cent' Jackson is actually quite watchable as gun runner Rich Taylor who dreams of hitting the big time and won't let anyone stand in his way. The film opens with an ambush outside a nightclub and should have ended with a shoot out in a warehouse but the director made the mistake of slapping on a sloppy ending that sucks all the impetus out of the film. Detroit looks really good and has been sympathetically shot by the director although it was quite galling to see whole streets of abandoned detatched homes and really brought home the devastation caused by the sub-prime mortgage fiasco. I noticed the comment about poor digital quality by another reviewer but rest assured the blu ray is an excellent transfer and apart from a few gloomy scenes is pin sharp. The soundtrack is good and makes good use of the soundfield and as you would expect features a fair smattering of gangsta rap songs. With a sharper actor in Kilmer's role and a curtailed ending this could have been a contender.

Very good movie, but the reason it dont get top rating is its wierd ending. Otherwise one the best films in a long time. Original, well acted, and a nice story :)

If you want to upgrade your DVD of the pistol-slappin' "Gun" to BLU RAY and you live in the UK - there's two options.

The American BLU RAY issue on Image Entertainment is REGION A LOCKED - so it won't play on our machines unless they're chipped to be 'all regions' (which few are). But there's a EURO alternative on BLU RAY (a Region B release) that will work without playback problems and has a good picture.

If it's pricey on Amazon UK - look on Amazon.de for a better deal and check the seller does 'International Shipping'...

Not a bad little film. 50 is really good in it. He wrote and produced this so it his vehicle. The supporting cast are ok. Val Kilmer looks really depressed in this film (he has this 'I would rather be anywhere than here look') and slothfully drifts through the picture. But then again maybe he is just in character but he does look pretty dour. The blonde girl Annalynne McCord who plays Gabriella is extremely hot and it's probably worth the price tag for her alone. Well done fifty.
