I bought the collection because I have enjoyed Frost and Ilona Andrews before, but didn't get much from either this time.
The Frost story was... really mediocre. I didn't feel connected to either main character, the whole thing was 'told' and I came very close to giving up when the (frankly stupid) heroine decided to try and run away from a whole community of werewolves with bare feet (!!!) in the middle of Yellowstone. Sigh. 2 star
The Ilona A story was better, the idea was more interesting, and I was curious how it started. But... I am increasingly tired of the excess romance that IA is pumping in to inflate thin plots. I mean, this story had promise. It had an interesting situation and characters that could have gone somewhere, but instead, as soon as the two romantic leads meet up, the romance steamrollers everything, the action becomes formulaic, and the story jumps and stutters. 3 star
However, the Brook story is MUCH more interesting, and definitely worth 5 stars.
It starts with a great action scene, the female werewolf is adult, non-superhuman, bright and accessible. After all, who amongst us hasn't wondered about breaking down on a country road and finding the 'rescuer' set the trap? I liked the fact that the male lead seemed to genuinely care, was intelligent and adjusted very competently. No time wasted in oozing irritating sex appeal, or supernatural denial. I also liked that the female lead had her s**t together before the story started. The romance worked incidentally to the action. Very enjoyable resolution.
