Terror Danjah's "Undeniable" could just about serve as a summary of underground UK black dance music styles from the last decade or so. Such is the variety of style, in fact, that it sounds almost like a compilation - although Mr Danjah's use of no fewer than eight collaborators over the CD's 15 tracks (track 15 is uncredited) undoubtedly contributes to that impression.
Played end-to-end, this is a good-natured, old-fashioned racket reminiscent, in some places, of early Basement Jaxx - though vastly more streetwise than the Jaxx, and no less entertaining. Parts of it also put me in mind of The Streets' Original Pirate Material.
Variously, the album encompasses dubstep, ragga, hip-hop, UK garage, wonky, jungle, techno, grime, rave...I'm naming too many sub-genres now so I'll stop. There's even cheesy, Radio 1Xtra-type pop on "Story Ending" a song which sticks out like a sore thumb but, within the overall context of the LP, entertains. I must admit though, if I'd heard it in isolation, it certainly wouldn't have made me want to rush out and buy the record - quite the opposite.
The production is excellent - this will sound good on your car radio but it has a depth and attention to detail that will also benefit from a headphone listen. The bass on some tracks is so low it's implied.
Hyperdub release yet another winner. This label can do no wrong for me at the moment - it's starting to usurp Warp as Britain's premier electronic label.
