She may look like a petulant French teenager on the cover but....
Carminho actually creates a startingly mature and sophisticated Fado.
All acoustic - Portugese guitar, standard guitar and bass. The musicians are brilliant, the bass is notably good on many occasions, which is not something you typically notice in Fado! This is Fado with a twist - the twist being to totally respect the form and only modernise by giving a very light jazz feeling to say things like the bass (but it's only a vibe, a feeling).
This is very much deep rooted Fado. Carminho's voice is wonderfully rich and full - a complete contrast to the more theatrical style of Mariza. The tracks are well chosen and split between faster tempo and the deep melancholic slow paced beauty of Fado.
This is a very good CD - just ignore the hype in the world music press. I'd bought this CD a while ago and then it got released in the UK and the overblown hype almost turned me off. I decided to listen again. We really should leave Carminho space to develop. She's young and I'm sure able to offer many more great albums in the future.
If you don't like Fado, this could be the CD to draw you in. It's accessible enough to interest someone with a liking of smokey jazz or blues singers.
