5.0 out of 5 stars Young, gifted and Portugese
She may look like a petulant French teenager on the cover but....
Carminho actually creates a startingly mature and sophisticated Fado.
All acoustic - Portugese guitar, standard guitar and bass. The musicians are brilliant, the bass is notably good on many occasions, which is not something you typically notice in Fado! This is Fado with a twist - the twist being...

3.0 out of 5 stars Carminho
A little disappointing. She doesn't bring anything particularly new to Fado. Could be a young edition of Amalia but not as good.

This is Fado with a twist - the twist being to totally respect the form and only modernise by giving a very light jazz feeling to say things like the bass (but it's only a vibe, a feeling).
This is very much deep rooted Fado. Carminho's voice is wonderfully rich and full - a complete contrast to the more theatrical style of Mariza. The tracks are well chosen and split between faster tempo and the deep melancholic slow paced beauty of Fado.
This is a very good CD - just ignore the hype in the world music press. I'd bought this CD a while ago and then it got released in the UK and the overblown hype almost turned me off. I decided to listen again. We really should leave Carminho space to develop. She's young and I'm sure able to offer many more great albums in the future.
If you don't like Fado, this could be the CD to draw you in. It's accessible enough to interest someone with a liking of smokey jazz or blues singers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastico!, 29 July 2013

Carminho played at Womad recently and had thousands of us enthralled. She is undoubtably an amazing new talent, with a rich, virtuoso voice that is at times so full of passion it has me fighting back tears, but she can also sing with a delicate and even humorous touch. The musicians who accompany her are excellent. Look out also for her album Alma, where she duets with Brazilian legends Milton Nascimento and Chico Buarque.

5.0 out of 5 stars MADE A FABULOUS GIFT, 16 April 2014

I had never heard of Carminho or Fado music, but my husband is a big fan of the latter. I bought him this download as a birthday gift and he was knocked out by the quality of the singing, the drama and the guitar music. To sum it up, he now wants everything this lady has ever recorded and I've learned a lot about the stunning sound of Fado. Highly recommended.

I found this interesting but it didn't really touch me in the same way as Maritza or some others - why I'm not sure
